JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The 2012 Atlantic Sun Men's Tennis Championships gets underway for second-seeded University of North Florida on Saturday when the Ospreys face third-seeded Stetson in the semifinals. Winner of Saturday's semifinal match moves on to Sunday's championship match at 10 a.m.
Saturday's match will be the third time UNF and Stetson have met in the tournament semifinals. In each of UNF's previous two trips to the Atlantic Sun Tournament, it was Stetson that ended the Ospreys' run in the semifinals.
In this season's earlier meeting, UNF defeated the Hatters 4-3 on Mar. 31 in DeLand, Fla. Daniel Sotomarino held off Njal Stene with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 three-set victory at No. 2 singles to clinch the match-winning point.
UNF, who is ranked No. 62 nationally, has won its last eight matches and enters the weekend with an 18-5 record. The Ospreys have won their last five road matches, including last weekend's matches at Kennesaw State and Mercer. The doubles duo of Norbert Nemcsek and Daniel Sotomarino ride an eight-match winning streak heading into the weekend. The pair was also one of three doubles teams to earn Second-Team All-Atlantic Sun doubles honors for the season. Meanwhile, Moritz Buerchner and Graham Edgar have put together a five-match winning streak en route to an undefeated 5-0 record on the season. In singles, Leonardo Nahar has won nine of his last 10 matches – including the last six, while Buerchner has won eight of his last nine.
Stetson advances to Saturday's semifinals after defeating sixth-seeded Florida Gulf Coast 4-0 in Friday's first round. The Hatters claimed the doubles points with wins on courts No. 1 and No. 2. Stetson then claimed the match's first three singles points.
Stetson's Maksim Levanoich was selected at the Atlantic Sun's Player of the Year, as voted on by the conference's head coaches. Levanovich, who was ranked as high as No. 113 in singles this season, has been strong at No. 1 singles throughout the season, bringing a 16-3 record into Saturday. The Hatters also landed Stene on the Second-Team All-Atlantic Sun, while Nathan Debut and Chester Espie were All-Freshman Team selections. Debut, Stene and Levanovich were responsible for the Hatters' singles points on Friday. Espie brings an 11-match winning streak and a 14-4 overall record into Saturday.
