FORT MYERS, Fla. – Top-seeded North Florida Men's Tennis dropped a back-and-forth match to third-seeded Stetson in the ASUN Championship Finals, 4-3, in Fort Myers, Fla., on Saturday.
North Florida and Stetson battled in doubles play with graduate student Breno Marques and sophomore Joao Portugal taking the third court 6-4 to begin doubles play.
After trailing early in doubles action on courts one and two, freshman Aron Major and graduate student Andreas Scott and sophomore Youssef Labbene and freshman Riccardo Ciulli battled back to force a tiebreaker on both courts.
Major and Scott would win the tiebreaker on court one, 7-6(4), to clinch the doubles point for the Ospreys on court one.
Scott and Marques would each grab their first sets to begin singles play. After trailing 5–3, Major came back to 6–6 and won the opening set in a tiebreak.
Stetson would begin singles play with a win on court four, but Scott would answer with a dominant 6-3, 6-2 win on court one, his 10th-consecutive win on the top court, to put the Ospreys back in the lead, 2-1.
Stetson responded with a win on court three to even the score, before Major earned a 7-6(4), 6-4 win to put the Ospreys back in the lead.
The Hatters would take court five to tie the game.
With the match tied at 3-3, Labbene would win his second set 6-3 to force a winner-take-all third set on court two.
Locked in a tight contest, Stetson pulled away in the third set to advance to the eventual final.
