JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – No. 58 University of North Florida men's tennis ends the regular season this weekend with a two-match trip to the state of Georgia. The Ospreys begin the weekend on Friday at Kennesaw State at 4 p.m., and then conclude it at Mercer on Saturday at 10 a.m.
The outcome of UNF's matches could have an impact on the seedings for next week's Atlantic Sun Championships. If the Ospreys need just one win to clinch the No. 2 seed. UNF can also lock up the No. 2 seed if Stetson loses to at either Belmont or Lipscomb this weekend.
UNF has won its last six matches and are coming off wins against Belmont and Lipscomb during its home finale last weekend. That six-match stretch also included three road wins at Jacksonville (5-2 on Mar. 26), Florida Gulf Coast (6-1 on Mar. 29) and then-No. 74 Stetson (4-3 on Mar. 31).
The doubles duo of Norbert Nemcsek and Daniel Sotomarino has been a solid combination for the Ospreys throughout the 2012 season. Nemscek and Sotomarino have won their last seven matches en route to a 16-4 record on the season and 11-3 at No. 1 doubles. The pair also brings a 6-1 mark into the weekend. Also in doubles, Moritz Buerchner and Graham Edgar have formed an undefeated combination on the No. 2 court for the last four matches, owning a 4-0 record on the season and in the A-Sun.
In singles, Sotomarino and Leonardo Nahar each carry four-match winnings streaks into the weekend. Sotomarino, who was named this week's A-Sun Player of the Week, has posted thrilling wins at No. 2 in each of his last four matches. Three of those matches have included a tie-breaker needing to be played, while his match against Stetson's Njal Stene was won in three sets. He posted the match-winning points in both of UNF's 4-3 wins against Stetson and Belmont. Nahar posted strong performances throughout the month of March and as well for the first two matches in April. He has gone 11-1 since defeating Florida A&M's Fabrice Myrtil on Mar. 4 and has played on the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 courts during that 12-match span.
Kennesaw State will attempt to snap a three-match skid on Friday. The Owls are coming off a 7-0 loss to ETSU last Saturday. Kennesaw State has not won a conference match since defeating Lipscomb 4-2 on Mar. 25, which is currently the only A-Sun win for the Owls this season.
Mercer returns to its home courts this weekend after spending the last two weeks on the road. The Bears welcome Jacksonville on Friday before hosting UNF on Saturday. Mercer was 1-3 on its road swing that included three conference matches and one non-conference match. The Bears' lone win was a 6-1 victory over Kennesaw State, which started the four-match road stretch. Mercer's win over the Owls is also its only A-Sun win of the season.
