JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – No. 50 University of North Florida men's tennis defeated Jacksonville 5-2 on Monday morning at the Keith Watson Family Tennis Complex in a match that was prolonged due to weather-related delays.
The match started on Saturday morning and was delayed for approximately 90 minutes while the courts dried from Friday night storms that rolled through the Jacksonville area. Then midway through singles play, another round of storms came through the River City, forcing the conclusion of the match to be postponed to Monday.
With the win, UNF gains a barrel point in the SunTrust River City Rumble standings. The Ospreys hold a 9-3 advantage in the team standings with another point at stake with the women's tennis match later on Monday afternoon.
Following the first delay, UNF claimed the doubles point by taking two of the three matches. Norbert Nemcsek and Daniel Sotomarino began the match with an 8-4 No. 1 doubles win over Jose Fantova and Fernando Bano Lopez. UNF sealed the doubles point with Pedro Davisson and Moritz Buerchner posting an 8-3 win over Richard Casagrande and Matt Hansen at No. 2 doubles. Meanwhile, at No. 3 doubles, Eduardo Martinez and Eimon Heywood defeated Leonardo Nahar and Graham Edgar 8-7 (3).
In singles, UNF was up one set in four of the six singles positions when the match was halted due to rain. On Monday, the Ospreys went on to take all four of those singles matches. Buerchner downed Fantova 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 and Nemcsek posted a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Bano Lopez at No. 2 singles. Timo Kranz and Edgar finished right after each other to give UNF a 5-0 advantage. Kranz took a 6-3, 6-1 No. 5 singles win over Heywood and Edgar cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 No. 6 singles win against Hansen.
