JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Following a seven-match homestand, the No. 50 University of North Florida men's tennis team takes it to the road for the next three matches, starting at cross-town rival Jacksonville on Saturday at 10 a.m., at the Keith Watson Family Tennis Center.
“JU is coming off a very nice win against USC Upstate, a team we struggled to beat last week,” said head coach Adam Schaechterle. “They are a talented squad that has improved as the spring has gone on.”
Winner of the match will earn a barrel point for its school in the SunTrust River City Rumble. UNF enters Saturday with an 8-3 lead in the standings. Since the start of the SunTrust River City Rumble in the 2005-06 school year, UNF holds a 5-1 record against the Dolphins.
UNF has won six of its last seven matches and comes off a 7-0 sweep of Elon on Wednesday to wrap up the non-conference portion of its schedule. The remainder of the Ospreys' schedule is all Atlantic Sun opponents with five of their last seven matches of the regular season being on the road. UNF is just 2-3 on the season away from the UNF Tennis Complex; however, all three of those losses were to nationally-ranked teams.
Individually, Moritz Buerchner and Leonardo Nahar each carry seven-match winning-streaks in singles play. Buerchner has gone to three sets at No. 1 singles five times during his streak and has rallied from being down after the first set three of those times. Meanwhile, Nahar's played primarily at No. 5 singles during his seven-match streak, but most recently had a 6-2, 6-1 No. 4 singles victory in the Ospreys' sweep of Elon.
Jacksonville saw an eight-match losing skid end last Saturday with a 5-2 win over USC Upstate. With the win against USC Upstate, the Dolphins picked up the doubles point and then took four-of-six singles matches for the win. The Dolphins, who are playing their final season as a varsity program, begin a two-match weekend with UNF on Saturday and then Nicholls State on Sunday. The weekend will conclude a nine-match homestand for Jacksonville, who has played 11 of its 13 matches this spring on its home courts at the Keith Watson Family Tennis Complex.
