JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—The No. 2 seed University of North Florida men's tennis team fell 4-0 to the top-seed ETSU in the championship match of the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament on Sunday at the UNF Tennis Complex.
"I am really proud of our guys for competing as hard as they possibly could and putting it all on the line," said head coach Mark Finnegan. "We focused all year on executing so many things we accomplished today, but we just came up a little bit short. ETSU was a class act today with their behavior and they are a great team. I want to thank all the supporters that came out, they were amazing and they made it a very special occasion for everyone."
In doubles, the Ospreys grabbed an 8-3 victory from Yannick Zuern and Caio Gomes with their defeat of Diego Nunez and Ismael Merino at No. 1 position. At No. 3, Sebastian Yllera and Conner Huertas beat Bernardo Craveiro and Pablo Tellez, 8-3, evening the score in doubles play to 1-1. Roger Ordeig and David Biosca downed Norbert Nemcsek and Zach Goldberg 8-6 at No. 2 to clinch the important doubles point.
North Florida dropped matches at the No. 2 and No. 4 spots in singles competition, falling behind the Bucs, 3-0. At No. 2, Nunez posted a straight set 6-4, 6-3 victory over Nemcsek, while Ismael Merino posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Craveiro at No. 4. Ordeig claimed the first set 6-0 over Tellez at No. 6, before Tellez battled back to tie the score at 5-5 in the second set. Ordeig would win the next two games to earn the decisive point and give ETSU their eighth consecutive tournament title.
Zach Goldberg was named to the All-Tournament team after the match. His performance on Saturday's semifinals clinched the match for the Ospreys over FGCU's Lance Lvovsky.
North Florida closes their 2014 season with a final 14-10 overall record.
