WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The University of North Florida men's tennis team earned wins in three singles matches and two doubles matches en route to a 4-3 road victory over the William & Mary Tribe on Friday evening.
The Ospreys, who entered the day at No. 62 in this week's ITA National Rankings, began the match on a good note, as they earned wins in the first two doubles matches to earn the doubles point.
"I was especially pleased with our energy and aggressiveness in doubles," Head Coach Adam Schaechterle said. "William & Mary is very well-coached and used to getting the doubles point on its home courts, so that was big for us to dominate doubles play on all three courts."
Senior Moritz Buerchner and sophomore Norbert Nemcsek, ranked No. 20 in the country as a duo, grabbed the opening win at #1 doubles, 8-4, over Anton Andersson and Aaron Chaffee. Shortly afterwards, senior Daniel Sotomarino and sophomore Timo Kranz clinched the doubles point at #3 doubles with an 8-2 victory over John Banks and Will Juggins.
The #2 doubles match was abandoned, though seniors Pedro Davisson and Julien Belair held a 6-3 lead over Jamie Whiteford and Adrian Vodislav at the time.
Nemcsek kicked off the singles action at #3 by earning his first solo win of the young 2013 campaign, downing Andersson in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5. Buerchner, ranked No. 72 in the country, added another singles point for UNF by grabbing a win at #1 following Whiteford's retirement. Buerchner led 4-6, 6-0, 3-0 at the time.
Senior Leonardo Nahar clinched the match for the Ospreys at #5 singles earning a hard-fought, three-set victory over Juggins, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. With the win, Nahar improved his 2013 singles record to an unblemished 2-0.
"Singles was a dogfight. They had a great crowd and the forced us to get tough at the end of the match," Schaechterle said. "I was proud of our guys for staying calm and executing in the big moments."
Of the three singles losses suffered by the Ospreys, only one was decided in straight sets, as UNF fought to make the Tribe earn every point.
The Ospreys take the court again tomorrow afternoon, as they head to No. 31 Virginia Commonwealth for a 1 p.m. bout in Richmond, Va.
