UNF Bests JU, Claims A-Sun Regular Season Title

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – With a 4-2 win over crosstown rival Jacksonville on Sunday afternoon, the University of North Florida men's tennis team secured the 2011 Atlantic Sun Conference Regular Season Championship. The Ospreys claim the No. 1 seed in the upcoming A-Sun Conference Men's Tennis Championship, April 14-16 in DeLand, Fla.
As the No. 1 seed, the Ospreys will have a bye in the first round and will play the winner of Stetson vs. Mercer in the semifinals on Friday, April 15 at 2 p.m.
UNF (15-6, 9-1 A-Sun) secured the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead after winning the No. 1 and No. 3 matches.
Daniel Sotomarino and Hleb Maslau teamed up in the No. 1 to secure an 8-4 decision over Logan Shalmi and Lance Lvovsky. In the No. 3 doubles, the Osprey duo of Leonardo Nahar and Pedro Davisson paired up for an 8-6 win over Fernando Bano Lopez and Matthew Hansen.
In singles matches, the Ospreys took wins in the No. 1, 3 and 6 matches. Maslau took Jose Fantova to three sets in the No. 1. After falling in the opening set, 6-3, Maslau rallied back to take the next two sets with scores of 6-0, 6-3.
Moritz Buerchner secured a win in the No. 3 match, defeating Lvovsky in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. In the No. 6 singles, Beauregard Treyz defeated Shalmi, 6-2, 6-4.
In the No. 4 match, Davisson battled Larry Condez to three sets. Davisson took the first set, 6-4, but the JU player responded to win the second set 6-1. The two went back and forth in the final set, but Condez held on for a 7-5 win.
The Ospreys will wrap up the regular season schedule this week, hosting Memphis on Monday, April 11 at 10 a.m. followed by a trip to No. 45 USF for a 2 p.m. match on Tuesday, April 12.
