UNF hosts Elon Wednesday, visits ETSU and USC Upstate this weekend
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A five-match homestand will come to a close for the University of North Florida men's tennis team in mid-week action before the Ospreys make their final road trip of the season for a pair of Atlantic Sun Conference matchups this weekend.
Schedule
UNF (9-5, 4-2 A-Sun) vs. Elon (11-4) – Wednesday, March 25 – 2 p.m.
UNF at No. 63 East Tennessee State (4-7, 3-0) – Friday, March 27 – 2:30 p.m.
UNF at No. 72 USC Upstate (16-2, 4-0) – Saturday, March 28 – 10 a.m.
Inside the matchups
Elon upped its current winning streak to eight matches with a pair of 7-0 victories last Saturday against Winston-Salem State and Georgia State. The Phoenix have notched five sweeps during their current upswing while all four Elon losses this season have come to teams ranked in the top 65. Damon Gooch boasts the Phoenix's best singles record at 12-4 and has won his last eight contests. Gooch and Philip Nemec have won 10 doubles matches in a row and are 14-2 on the season.
Five of ETSU's losses this season came between Jan. 31 and March 1 – a stretch where the now-nationally-ranked Bucs failed to win a match. In their latest action, the Bucs rolled to a 6-1 win against Campbell and pushed their A-Sun winning streak to 27 matches. ETSU, which has won back-to-back conference championships, tangles with Winthrop Tuesday before hosting the Ospreys Friday.
Fourteen matches have come and gone for USC Upstate since the nationally-ranked team dropped its last decision. The Spartans slipped 5-2 at Yale on Feb. 7 before beginning a winning streak that includes wins over Georgetown, South Carolina State, Winthrop, No. 71 UNC Wilmington and five league opponents. Ramiro Blanco has yet to drop a singles match, compiling a 16-0 record in the Nos 3-6 positions.
UNF hosted Upstate and ETSU last season and fell in both matches at the UNF Tennis Complex. The Spartans moved past the Ospreys 5-2, and ETSU notched a 7-0 win. The Bucs were ranked No. 33 at the time.
Looking Back
The Ospreys came out of four home matches last week with three wins, and the lone loss came at the hands of Winthrop by a score of 5-2. The week began with a 4-3 win against Wichita State and ended with two conference wins against Kennesaw State and Mercer.
While UNF has racked up a 7-2 record at the UNF Tennis Complex this season, the road has not been as favorable to the team. The Ospreys will try to push their road record back above the even mark with its northern swing. UNF is 2-3 away from home this season.
Who's Hot
Sophomore Graham Edgar finished the week with a perfect 4-0 record in singles play to push his winning streak to five for the season. He posted straight-set wins at the No. 6 position against Wichita State and Winthrop before moving to No. 5 against Kennesaw State and No. 4 against Mercer. He also won in straight sets in the two A-Sun matches over the weekend.
In doubles action, he and junior Ronnie Sang notched a 3-1 record during the four-match span with the sole loss coming in UNF's only loss of the week to Winthrop.
Did you hear?
Head Coach Igal Buberman on the season's end approaching: “All of the hard work the guys put forth in the fall and the early spring is paying off as we enter our final three weeks of play. The team is fit and ready to finish on a good note.”
Buberman on this week's matchups: “Elon, which was recently ranked, will be a great test match for us. ETSU and Upstate are both ranked teams, which will make our conference weekend very challenging.”
Buberman on last week's results: “Playing mid-week matches during spring break was a productive sacrifice by the team, and it helped us progress while we won three of four last week.”
