Joined UNF Staff: November 1994
Dr. Richard Gropper was selected as the University of North Florida[apos]s fifth Director of Athletics on Nov. 17, 1994. Since his arrival, the UNF athletics program has experienced tremendous growth and development, not only on the field, but in the classrooms and the community as well. Competitive and academic achievement over the length of Dr. Gropper[apos]s term of leadership have illustrated that there can be a successful marriage between sports and academics at the collegiate level. In 2004, following a highly successful decade of competition at the Division II level, the UNF Athletics program embarked on a history-making, five-year reclassification effort to NCAA Division I, the nation[apos]s highest level of collegiate athletic competition. The 2005-06 academic and athletic year gave witness to the beginning of that transition when UNF joined the Atlantic Sun Conference as its newest Division I member. Financial stability, facility development and strong community involvement have been hallmarks of Dr. Gropper[apos]s tenure. During his time at UNF he has emphasized the building of the athletics budget, growth of the athletics booster organization (the Osprey Club), increased corporate and private support for the athletics department and helped create high-profile community events that spotlight UNF student-athletes and their achievements. New facilities built under Dr. Gropper[apos]s watch include a 9,300-seat soccer/track stadium, an on-site instructional golf facility, the installation of a warm-up/recreational track and a state-of-the-art indoor batting and pitching facility. Further facility enhancements are planned for the near future as a byproduct of the success of the [quote]Campaign For Athletics,[quote] a major fundraising effort initiated as part of the program[apos]s move to NCAA Division I status. All UNF Athletics facilities have seen a myriad of improvements and upgrades during Dr. Gropper[apos]s time at the University. Seeing a program through transition is nothing new for Dr. Gropper, who was hired as part of the administrative team for the Florida International University athletics program in 1988. He served as the associate director of athletics at FIU during the school[apos]s transition from Division II to Division I until his departure for UNF in 1994. While Dr. Gropper was at FIU, the school was a member of the Trans America Athletic Conference, which is now the Atlantic Sun Conference -- UNF[apos]s current conference home for all sports except swimming and diving. A-Sun Commissioner Bill Bibb was also the commissioner of the TAAC during FIU[apos]s membership, a relationship that paid dividends for UNF once the school announced its intentions to move to Division I in October 2004. Dr. Gropper[apos]s experience of guiding another state university through the same process proved invaluable as he facilitated UNF[apos]s transition efforts in 2005. All Osprey sports -- with the exception of golf and swimming and diving -- will complete their NCAA-mandated [quote]transition[quote] period prior to the 2009-10 academic year. Prior to joining the athletics department staff at FIU, Dr. Gropper worked at Miami-Dade Community College, the nation[apos]s largest community college, in a variety of positions including -- Director of Admissions, Registrar, Director of Alumni Affairs and lastly as the Assistant Athletics Director and Business Manager. Born in Springfield, Mass., Dr. Gropper moved to Miami at age 6 and lived there until 1995 when he and his family departed for Jacksonville and UNF. A product of Florida[apos]s State University System, Dr. Gropper received his bachelor[apos]s degree from the University of South Florida and both his master[apos]s and doctoral degrees from Florida International University. Dr. Gropper and his wife, Ida, have two children -- Richard and Michael.
