JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's tennis team returns to the UNF Tennis Center for the first time in 25 days when the Ospreys host Division II's No. 2 Barry on Friday at 11 a.m.
“Barry is an extremely talented team that played in its fourth-straight NCAA Division II championship match in 2011,” said head coach Adam Schaechterle. “This is the kind of match that will test our resolve and prepare us for the conference season.”
UNF has won its last two matches. The Ospreys are coming off a two-week hiatus and a 6-1 victory at Georgia Southern on Jan. 28. At Georgia Southern, UNF claimed the doubles point and five of the six singles matches.
Friday's match will be the Ospreys' second home match of the season. UNF won its home-opener against then-No. 71 Radford 5-2 on Jan. 16. Friday's match will also be the first of two matches against Division II opponents. UNF hosts No. 3 Armstrong Atlantic State on Sunday.
Barry is one of the elite men's tennis programs in Division II. The Buccaneers have reached the NCAA Division II Championship match in each of the last four years and won it all in 2010. In singles play, Marco Mokrzycki is currently ranked No. 8 nationally and Max Wimmer is No. 18. In doubles, Wimmer and Leonel Vivas are ranked No.5 nationally.
The Buccaneers have started the season 2-0, having defeated Florida Southern 9-0 and Embry-Riddle 6-3. Mokrzycki (No. 1), Romain Costamagna (No. 3) and Vivas (No. 6) bring 2-0 singles records into Friday's match.
