UNF hosts Campbell and visits Jacksonville
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – One home match and one SunTrust River City Rumble road match across town will draw the University of North Florida men's tennis team's season to a close this week as the Ospreys fight to keep their record above even.
Schedule
UNF (9-8, 4-4 A-Sun) vs. Campbell (11-8, 3-3) – Friday, April 3 – 2 p.m.
UNF at Jacksonville (10-6, 4-4) – Wednesday, April 8 – 2 p.m.
Inside the matchups
After winning five in a row, Campbell has dropped four of its last five, including three league losses, with the lone win coming against Lipscomb. The Camels are 4-3 on the road this season and 2-0 away from home in A-Sun competition. Last weekend, Campbell grabbed a 4-1 win against Lipscomb before sliding in a 5-2 outcome against Belmont.
The Dolphins host Campbell Saturday and Florida A&M Sunday before bringing in the Ospreys next Wednesday. Jacksonville dropped both its matches over the weekend against USC Upstate and East Tennessee State to break a three-match upswing. JU's Matthew Rock and Francisco Riveroll boast a 9-1 record at the top doubles position and a No. 67 national ranking. The Dolphins are 1-3 in conference road matches and 2-3 on the road this season.
This week's opponents each tallied a 6-1 score against the Ospreys last season with UNF splitting the decisions. Campbell knocked off the Ospreys in Buies Creek, N.C., but UNF wrapped up the season with a home win against Jacksonville to earn a crucial rumble point, which allowed UNF to retain the trophied wooden barrel.
Looking Back
The Ospreys underwent a rough two-match stretch against Upstate and ETSU, failing to claim a point during the road trip. ETSU notched a 4-0 win, and Upstate rolled to a 7-0 victory. The losses pushed UNF's losing streak to three matches beginning with a 4-3 home loss against Winthrop last Wednesday.
The slip up against Winthrop marked just the third home loss this season for the Ospreys. UNF has compiled a 39-21 overall singles record, a 7-3 overall record and a 3-1 A-Sun mark in dual play at the UNF Tennis Complex. Freshman Marcos Chiaretti and senior Federico Levi each own an 8-2 record in individual home action. Chiaretti has perfect marks at the Nos. 4 and 5 positions while holding a 2-2 record at No. 3. Levi has played at the top spot in every match this season.
Did you hear?
Head Coach Igal Buberman on the season: “As a coach, you always hope the players click at some point and put together everything the team works toward during the season. We had a young group this year, and they worked hard in conditioning and learned to play well with one another and communicate effectively on the court.”
Buberman on finishing strong: “We need to win both matches this week and finish with a winning record. The guys can make all their efforts pay off and show the things they have learned throughout the season.”
Buberman on the season finale at JU: “It will be an interesting matchup. The players for both teams know one another well both personally and on the court, and I think they are excited about playing against their friends. It will add fuel to the fire in a rivalry that is already very heated.”
