JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Four men's tennis matches will be played in a span of five days at the University of North Florida Tennis Complex beginning with two mid-week non-conference matches and coming to a close with a pair of Atlantic Sun Conference matchups over the weekend.
Schedule
UNF (6-4, 2-2 A-Sun) vs. Wichita State (5-7) – Tuesday, March 17 – 2 p.m.
UNF vs. Winthrop (4-5) – Wednesday, March 18 – 2 p.m.
UNF vs. Kennesaw State (4-6, 0-1 A-Sun) – Friday, March 20 – 2 p.m.
UNF vs. Mercer (5-5, 0-1 A-Sun) – Saturday, March 21 – 11 a.m.
Inside the matchups
The week gets started for the Ospreys with two mid-week non-conference matches against Wichita State and Winthrop. The Wichita State Shockers have gathered all of their wins at home this season and have been very streaky, falling in their last three outings to teams ranked in the nation's top 75. Before that, the Shockers won five straight home matches after opening the season with four road losses. Wichita State is 5-0 at home but has yet to find a win away from its own courts in seven tries.
Winthrop will play their second match of a four-match road trip when it faces the Ospreys Wednesday. The Eagles visit No. 61 Stetson Tuesday. Half of Winthrop's wins have come on the road this season, where the Eagles are 2-3. In its most recent action, Winthrop whirled past Liberty 7-0 at home.
Friday's match will mark Kennesaw State's third-straight road contest and only the Owls' second league test of the season. KSU fell to Campbell in their A-Sun opener 5-2 on March 7 in Kennesaw, Ga. Since then, the Owls split a pair of matches in Daytona Beach, Fla., dropping a 6-1 decision to Appalachian State before knocking off Bethune-Cookman 5-2. The win over BCU marked the Owls' first road win through four road matches this season.
When Mercer comes to take on UNF Saturday, the Bears will have three league matches under their belts. Mercer fell to Campbell 5-2 in their league opener and most recently dropped a 7-0 decision to USC Upstate. The Bears, who saw their match against East Tennessee State postponed due to heavy rain, will face Jacksonville on Friday. Mercer sits at 3-3 when not playing on their home courts.
Looking Back
The Ospreys took their first A-Sun road trip of the season last weekend and experienced mixed results by the same margin. In what was the first indoor match for most of the Osprey squad, Belmont hung a 7-0 loss on UNF in a match that featured three singles matches that went to three sets and a doubles outcome that was decided by a 9-8 score in the No. 3 position.
UNF responded Saturday by grabbing a 7-0 win against Lipscomb to close its swing through the Music City. The match featured five three-set singles matches with three Ospreys battling back from first-set defeats. Junior Kurt Gattiker, sophomore Graham Edgar and freshman Marc Misanovic' each captured the pivotal second set to stay alive and each closed competitive matches down the stretch.
Who's Hot
The tandem of Gattiker and freshman Marcos Chiaretti was the only UNF doubles pair to notch wins in both matches over the weekend. The duo tallied an 8-6 score in both outings over the weekend. Both also went 1-1 in singles play with Gattiker being a part of three-set matches on both days. He slipped 10-3 in the super tiebreaker against Belmont but bounced back from a 6-4 opening-set loss at Lipscomb by posing 6-3 and 6-4 second and third sets scores.
Did you hear?
Head coach Igal Buberman on the road weekend: “Playing indoors always presents a challenge. Belmont competed very well, but we had a chance to be in the match. They exerted their home-court advantage and were able to win some pressure points in close matches.”
Buberman on this week's non-conference matches: “Both teams are coming from areas where it is not really known if a match will be played indoors or outdoors. I think fitness will be an advantage for us against these two teams that are very tough opponents, and we must capitalize on that.”
Buberman on this week's A-Sun action: “The conference season is still young. We need to keep our focus and pull our record back above the even mark. We want to play strong in this situation so that we can be prepared when we step on the court next season in a position to play for seeding into the conference tournament.”
