JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - No. 39 North Florida men's golf will have its sights set on a spot in the NCAA Championship when it competes in the New Haven Regional from May 16-18 at Yale Golf Course.
For the first time in program history, the Ospreys will be playing a tournament in the New England region. It will also be their eighth-consecutive year in the regional round that they will be playing outside the state of Florida.
UNF will have a tough road ahead, going up against seven ranked teams headlined by North Carolina and Texas Tech, who both rank top 10 in the nation. They are currently ranked as the seven seed in a 12-team field where they top five teams advance to the championship, as well as the top individual from a non-qualifying team.
The Ospreys will have a strong group competing in this year's New Haven Regional, as they tout the ASUN Golfer of the Year, Nick Gabrelcik, as well as a First Team All-ASUN selection, Robbie Higgins. Davis Lee, Cody Carroll and Brandon Mancheno are also veteran players that have experience in NCAA regional play in their careers.
- This will be their 13th overall appearance in an NCAA Regional, as well as their 12th consecutive appearance.
- The Ospreys earned an automatic bid to play in the regional tournament after winning their fourth ASUN title in seven years.
- Nick Gabrelcik also won his third medalist crown of the season after shooting 8-under 205 to win the ASUN individual title.
- Gabrelcik, as well as Lee and Carroll, all have experience in playing in a regional, while Higgins and Duff will be making their NCAA debut.
- It will be the first time in program history that the Ospreys will compete in the New England region, as well as their eighth consecutive NCAA Tournament played outside of Florida.
- It's also the most northern state they'll play this season since the Windon Memorial Classic in Glencoe, Ill.
- The field will feature 12 teams, including eight total teams in the top 50, as well as four teams in the top 20.
- UNF enters the New Haven Regional with two team titles and seven top-five finishes, which will be needed to advance to the NCAA Championship.
- They also have earned a 288.06 scoring average on the year, along with their individuals having 18 combined top-10 finishes.
- The NCAA New Haven Regional will tee off Monday morning and will complete the tournament with 18 holes on each day through Wednesday afternoon.
- Gabrelcik is coming off his recent individual win at the ASUN Championship, as well as his unanimous selection for back-to-back ASUN Golfer of the Year, after shooting 8-under 205 in the conference tournament.
- Higgins has been one of the most improved players this year, as he enters this tournament as a First Team All-ASUN selection and a All-Tournament selection after his 4-under 209 week at the ASUN Championship.
- Lee placed inside the top 15 at the conference tournament at UGA with a score of 5-over 218, while also joining Gabrelcik as the only player this year to play in all 11 tournaments.
- Carroll will be making his second consecutive NCAA Regional appearance, along with Gabrelcik and Lee, after he placed in the top 10 for the first time this season with a score of 3-over 216 at the ASUN meet.
- Mancheno will round out the group heading to New Haven, as the former NCAA Championship individual medalist from 2018 looks to find success once again in postseason play.
