The UNF Hayt Golf Complex is a first-class facility that is home to not only to the North Florida Men's and Women's Golf programs, but also provides an unmatched 9 hole par 3 and driving range golf facility for the general public.
Located in the southeast corner of the University of North Florida, the UNF Hayt Golf Complex opened its doors in 2002. Former North Florida Golf Head Coach John Brooks first met with former University of North Florida President Dr. Adam Herbert and Athletics Director Dr. Richard Gropper about the project in 1996 and secured the land allotment. With that provision came a promise from Brooks that no university money would have to be siphoned into the facility. That's where local businessman and UNF golf enthusiast John Hayt entered the picture. Hayt gave an initial donation of $750,000 to help get the project started and later gave two more gifts of $100,000 each. Add on state funds that matched Hayt's initial donation and another $100,000 donated by the First Tee, plus other gifts along the way, and the final donation total amounted to more than $2 million.
The 9 hole par 3 Hayt Golf Complex comes complete with a lighted driving range and putting green. There is a separate dedicated practice area at the far side of the public range for the UNF golf teams. The very successful UNF Men’s Osprey Team was joined by a Women’s Golf Team in 2012-2013. Both teams can now appreciate a private driving, putting, chipping and bunker practice facility. Titleist Pro V1 balls are provided for use in this arena, and it is open for team use every day from 8 am to 8 pm or longer, if needed. Before and after a day on the range, members of the North Florida Men's and Women's Golf programs can relax in their team rooms, which includes an oak-lined locker for every member of the team, showers, couches, a television and computer center.
For the general public, there are approximately 30 shaded practice bays complete with ceiling fans to ensure comfort during the hot summer months. The installation of top-grade artificial turf in the public driving range area has successfully improved this experience. A recent addition of 5,000 new TaylorMade practice balls are delivered through an automatic ball machine located at the range. The facility plays host to an assortment of charity organizations that promote the game on various levels of competition while offering instructions from volunteer coaches and organizers. The affordable and welcoming nature of the facility is key to its success. There are private instructors who act as independent contractors available as well. The facility is available for private events.
