Ospreys Clip Omaha, 4-3
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Despite trailing after doubles, No. 68 North Florida men's tennis (9-5) had an early start in singles, staved off Omaha's rally and Matt Carroll clinched it before the rain came as UNF rolled the Mavericks, 4-3, Monday, March 14.
UNF is 9-5 on the year and 7-0 at home, completing a perfect non-conference slate on its home courts. Despite the match going 4-3, all singles courts finished in straight sets as the duration of competition was right around two hours and 30 minutes.
Rain started to fall right as Carroll neared match point, adding to the tension on the deciding court.
How it Happened
The doubles point was up for grabs as both teams battled for the initial tally. UNF's PJ Kotan and Breno Marques won, 6-4, to claim the third court, while Omaha (6-12) evened things up with its own 6-4 win at the second court. The Mavericks claimed the point by winning at the top slot, 7-5.
Playing at the sixth slot, Joe Ellis evened things up right away with a straight-sets win. Nilo Duarte stayed hot, winning 6-3, 6-4 to give UNF the lead for good. Right behind him was Jonas Hartenstein, who really swung the momentum in favor of UNF with a 7-5, 6-4 triumph.
Omaha answered back, tying the match up 3-3 by winning at courts four and five within minutes of each other.
All eyes turned to Carroll's court for the finish. While Carroll won the first set, Todd Chen of Omaha created a 4-1 lead in the second session. Carroll wasn't fazed by oncoming rain or the deficit, winning five-straight games as he clinched it for the Ospreys.
