Carroll Clutch Again, Clinches Match
DELAND, Fla. - For the third-straight match between UNF men's tennis and Stetson (7-6, 0-1 ASUN), the final score came out to be 4-3. This go around it was North Florida (10-5, 1-0 ASUN) on top as the Ospreys won their ASUN Conference opener in DeLand Sunday, March 20.
Clinch king Matt Carroll was just that once more Sunday as he secured the decisive point with a straight-sets win at the third slot.
How it Happened
Carroll and Duarte have been critical to UNF's success this year and that was the case in doubles as the duo blanked Stetson's slot two doubles team. Stetson got one court back at the third slot, but it was Jorge Nunez and Jonas Hartenstein that claimed the doubles point, winning 6-4 at the top slot.
The doubles point turned out to be huge for deciding the outcome as Stetson packed a punch in singles. The Hatters evened the match with a two-set win at the fifth slot, but PJ Kotan got back in the win column with an impressive 6-2, 6-0 victory at four singles.
Stetson's top singles player, Diogo Marques, was clinical, winning in straight sets to once again even the score. Duarte and Carroll came through with wins in straight sets, putting the match away at 4-2.
The Hatters added one team point at slot six with a three-set 10-point tiebreaker win.
