JACKSONVILLEÂ -- ASUN South Division champion North Florida women's soccer team posted an undefeated ASUN record for the first time in program history after netting four second-half goals in a 4-0 victory Saturday afternoon versus crosstown rival Jacksonville at Hodges Stadium.
RECORDS
North Florida | 9-1-0 (6-0-0 ASUN)
Jacksonville | 1-9-1 (1-4-1 ASUN)
GOALS
UNF - 57' | Carmel Oliveira (unassisted)
UNF - 59' | Thais Reiss (Penalty Kick)
UNF - 82' | Julia Martin (unassisted)
UNF - 89' | Hannah Menendez (Assist: Chloe Tebon)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- North Florida dominated the run of match for the first half, peppering the Jacksonville goal with 11 shots but were unable to get one into the net
- Early in the contest, Emma Voigt sliced an angled shot that just curved right of the goal
- Minutes later, Thais Reiss served a ball to the back post but Haynes Grant's one-time attempt pushed left
- Carmel Oliveira forced a diving save from the JU keeper midway through the opening period and Zara Siassi nearly netted a goal off a free kick from midfield
- Reiss mounted the Osprey's best scoring opportunity of the first half, when she arched a shot in the closing seconds that caromed straight down off the crossbar but didn't cross the goal line
- Oliveira was able to convert on her next shot, tucking a ball just under the crossbar and over the outstretched hands of the Dolphin goalie in the 57th minute
- Reiss followed with her league-leading 9th goal of the season just two minutes later, when she successful executed her fourth penalty kick try of the year | Oliveira drew the UNF PK try after getting taking down in the box
- In the 82nd minute, reserve Julia Martin settled a poorly cleared ball and quickly fired it back over the JU netminder for her first goal of the season
- Senior Hannah Menendez capped the scoring on "Senior Day", slotting a well-played drop pass from Chloe Tebon into the left side netting
Â
- With the win, North Florida improved to 6-0-0 in ASUN play | First time UNF has finished in ASUN play and just second time in program history (2000: 5-0-0 Peach Belt) the squad has been unblemished in conference play
- Victory was the third of the season and sixth straight overall versus JU | Ospreys have outscored Dolphins, 10-1, with a pair of 4-0 shutouts to start and close the regular season
- Marked the fifth shutout of the year for the Osprey defense
- Reiss' nine goals ranks 3rd most in a season for the program's D1 era
- Oliveira's goal was her second match winner of the year and she becomes just third player to score more than one goal this season
- With goals by Martin and Menendez, 11 different Ospreys have accounted for goals scored this year
- Ospreys outshot the Dolphins, 19-1 (overall) and 7-1 (SOG)
- Mercedes Sapp posted one save in earning her 9th win of the season and fifth clean sheet
- All three JU goalkeepers that saw action allowed a goal
FAULCONERÂ TALES
"Our second goal of the season was to go undefeated in conference play and we accomplished that today. We have been working hard on our finishing and hopefully that work is starting to pay off. I absolutely love this senior class. They bought into my vision of building a championship level program and they are a special group of student athletes. Now the real work begins. No one cares what we did before today. It's now all to play for. I am confident we will be ready."
- Head coach Eric Faulconer
