UNF Finishes Five-Match Home Stand With 5-2 Win
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A blustery evening didn't get in the way of the Ospreys against Brown as UNF toppled the Bears Tuesday, 5-2, in the finale of a five-match home stand at the UNF Tennis Complex.
UNF (8-9) got on the board by winning doubles. Sahil Deshmukh and Nilo Duarte cruised to a 6-3 win against No. 78 Roger Chou/Charles Tan. The Ospreys got a comeback win from Till Von Winning and Dominik Barton to clinch the point, rebounding from a 5-4 deficit to win the final three points.
Federico Nani finished first, winning 6-3, 6-3, against Robert Siniakowicz as UNF established a 2-0 upper hand. Brown's Ching Lam was strong, getting the Bears' their first point with a straight sets triumph at the second slot.
UNF's two seniors closed the door on Brown (7-5) though. Deshmukh secured a critical, 7-6, win in the first set. He carried the momentum into the second set, claiming the match with a 6-3 win against Peter Litsky. Von Winning clinched the night by fending off Jacob Walker, winning the second set tiebreaker, 7-4.
Brown claimed the fourth slot and Jorge Nunez grinded out a comeback 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5), victory as the teams played to completion.
Coach Lucas' Comments
"I'm really proud of the guys today in gutting out a win against a very good and gritty Brown team. It's always a challenge when you turn your attention to the ASUN and then have a midweek non-conference match thrown in there. The boys responded well, and we were able to maintain this positive momentum we have going. We know how good they were and the guys were ready for the challenge. Now we turn our sole attention to the ASUN and a quick turnaround with NJIT Saturday!" -- Head coach Matt Lucas.
