NEWARK, N.J. - North Florida women's tennis opened up Atlantic Sun play with a 6-1 victory at NJIT on Thursday afternoon at the Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility. Â
"Today was a good start to our A-Sun season," said head coach Audra Cohen. "It is not easy to transition from outdoors to indoor courts in such a short time frame and I felt the girls handled it well today."
The Ospreys captured the doubles point after a shutout in the No. 3 spot from Michelle Valdez and Mariella Calderon and a 6-3 victory from Noemi Hemmerich and Quetzali Vazquez at No. 1. It was Hemmerich and Vazquez' fourth straight victory to move to 5-2 overall.
UNF then advanced to singles to win five of the six contests in straight sets. Valdez captured the first win with a 6-1, -2 mark in the No. 2 position. Junior Luise Intert followed suit with a 6-3, -3 victory at the No. 4 spot to move to 6-3 on the year. A win at the No 1 spot from Hemmerich clinched the match with a 7-6 (3), 6-2 win. The teams finished the match to completion with the Ospreys winning in the No. 5 and No. 6 spots as well.Â
North Florida continues its trek in Atlantic Sun play at USC Upstate on Saturday. Match time is set for 10 a.m. in Spartanburg, S.C.
