Women's Tennis Has Strong Showing on Day 1 of Invite

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - North Florida women's tennis swept doubles play and had a strong performance during singles play against Troy to open the first day of the UNF Invite at the UNF Tennis Courts on Friday afternoon.
To start the day, the Ospreys dismantled the Barry and Flagler duos. Luise Intert and Quetzali Vazquez paired up for an 8-4 victory. In the second spot, Michelle Valdez and Irinia Karangozishvili took down Mary Jo Nanti and Lizanne Jinkertz from Flagler, 8-4. Freshman Kinga Gartner paired up with sophomore Rafaela Gomez for an 8-4 victory in the final doubles match.
The Ospreys then won four out of six singles matches against Troy. The Trojans are the only other team besides North Florida that brought six players. Valdez downed Sanae Ohta, 6-3, 6-4. Doubles partner, Karangozishvili, also picked up a win in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0, against Luisa Ferrauti of Troy. Vazquez beat Hannah Seizer, 6-3, 6-4 and Gomez wrapped up the wins with a three-set victory as well.
In the final doubles matches of the day, the Ospreys came away with two victories. Karangozishvili and Valdez paired up for an 8-6 win, while Rafaela Gomez and Lucia Montaño won by the same score.
Doubles play begins tomorrow at 9 a.m. with UNF playing Troy.
