ITHACA, N.Y. - Junior Jack Findel-Hawkins clinched match point to give No. 71 North Florida men's tennis a 4-2 against No. 47 Cornell on Thursday evening at Reis Indoor Courts.
"I am very proud of our team today and our willingness to adapt and change to take the win," said head coach Mark Finnegan. "We had a lot of guys win battles today and to have Jack close out the match the way he did should give the team a lot of belief on just how good we can be if we stick to our game."
The Ospreys owned a 3-2 lead after winning two singles matches and the doubles point when reigning Atlantic Sun Player of the Week Jack Findel-Hawkins rallied from a set down to defeat David Volfson, 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-2, to clinch the upset over the Big Red. On Volfson's serve, Findel-Hawkins returned the ball and then smacked the ball to the right corner out of his opponent's reach to secure the victory.
Findel-Hawkins paired with Yannick Zuern to grab a win in doubles, 6-3, in the No. 1 position, while Lasse Muscheites and Zach Goldberg clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win in the No. 2 spot. Findel-Hawkins and Zuern, ranked No. 4 in the country, are now 2-0 in dual matches and 10-3 overall on the season.
In singles play, Zuern put UNF in front, 2-1, with a 6-4, 6-4 win in the No. 2 match. Cornell evened the score with a win in the No. 4 position, but the Ospreys went back out in front with a 6-4, 6-4, win from Goldberg in No. 6 singles.
North Florida continues its trip in New York against No. 15 Columbia on Saturday. Match time is set for 6 p.m. at the Life Time Athletic Center in Harrison, N.Y. due to the indoor courts being unplayable due to the winter storm that hit the area last week.
