Bedford Cup Results/Draws
Â
FORT MYERS, Fla. – University of North Florida men's tennis won six singles matches on Friday before weather halted the first day of competition at the Bedford Cup that was held at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
Â
Yannick Zuern highlighted the Ospreys' performance as he won twice on Friday. Zuern cruised past Stetson's Simon Julian 6-1, 6-0 in the Round of 32 and then knocked off Florida State's No. 68 Michael Rinaldi 7-6, 6-1. Rinaldi was the top-seed in the Singles A bracket.
Â
Zach Goldberg and Lasse Muscheites also notched Round of 32 victories in Singles A, but fell in the Round of 16. Goldberg took a 6-1, 6-3 win from Florida A&M's Courage Okungbowa, but dropped a 6-2, 6-3 match to Florida's McClain Keesler in the next round. Meanwhile, Muscheites held off Miami's Niclas Genovese in a close 7-5, 7-5 opening match, but fell 6-4, 6-3 to Florida's Chase Perez-Blanco, who has the No. 2 seed in the tournament.
Â
In Singles B, Alberto De Meo claimed a 6-4, 6-3 match against Bethune-Cookman's Greg Almeida in the Round of 64. De Meo's Round of 16 match with Nile Clark was not completed when play was called on Friday. However, Jonathan Deautriell completed his Round of 16 match with UCF's Arjun Watane, claiming a 6-1, 6-4 victory in order to reach the quarterfinals.
Â
UNF's only doubles result came in the Doubles A bracket as Goldberg and Muscheites advanced to the quarterfinals due to top-seeded Rinaldi and Jose Gracia of Florida State retiring.
"All in all, it was a good day," said head coach Mark Finnegan. "Although we did not finish all the matches, the guys represented themselves very well. It was nice to see Jonathan get his first win in singles as an Osprey. Yannick played some great tennis to take down the tournament's No. 1 seed, who is also the No. 68 player in the country."
