JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida men's tennis opens play in the 2015 Atlantic Sun Men's Tennis Tournament on Saturday afternoon at the UNF Tennis Complex. The Ospreys, who are seeded No. 2 in the tournament and ranked No. 73 nationally, face No. 3 USC Upstate in the semifinals at 2:30 p.m. Winner of the match advances to Sunday's championship.
Â
"We've had the beat two weeks of practice all year," said head coach Mark Finnegan. "All of the guys are feeling super confident about their tennis game. It's going to be a challenge, but the guys are up for it. We hope to have a great crowd come out and cheer us on."
Â
In each of the last four Atlantic Sun Tournaments, UNF has received a first-round bye and ultimately reached the championship match. The Ospreys earned the No. 2 seed after dropping their final Atlantic Sun Regular Season match to Florida Gulf Coast, who is the No. 1 in the tournament.
Â
The Ospreys attempt to bounce back from two shutouts in their last two matches. In addition to falling 7-0 to Florida Gulf Coast, UNF dropped a 4-0 match to No. 73 Troy on Apr. 9 to finish the regular season. However, UNF has seen much success on its home courts and are 9-1 at the UNF Tennis Complex this season.
Â
USC Upstate advanced to Saturday's semifinals after defeating No. 6 Northern Kentucky in a close 4-0 match during Friday's quarterfinals. The Spartans have won their last four matches, three of which have been shutouts.
Â
In this season's earlier meeting, UNF edged out the Spartans 4-3 on Mar. 28 at the UNF Tennis Complex. After dropping the doubles point, the Ospreys came back to take four of the singles matches with Yannick Zuern's three-set No. 2 singles victory being the deciding point.
Â
Admission is free to the Atlantic Sun Tournament.
