ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – University of North Florida sand volleyball split its matches during the first day of its own 2015 UNF Sand Volleyball Invitational Presented by BEACH 105.5 FM at the St. Augustine Pier. The Ospreys began the day with a 3-2 loss to Florida Atlantic, but edged out South Carolina 3-2 later in the day. Additionally, UNF defeated Flagler 5-0 in an exhibition match.

Against Florida Atlantic, both of UNF's wins came from the top two pairs. At No. 1, Cari Whitmire and Cameron McGuire overpowered Mandy McIntosh and Chelsey Tekavec 21-14, 21-9. Meanwhile, at No. 2, Tessa Alyman and Jess Kinlaw fought back to win in three sets. FAU's Gabby Dishler and Beth Shoaff put up a 21-12 first-set victory, but Alyman and Kinlaw pulled out a close 22-20 second set and then cruised to a 15-9 win in the third set.

South Carolina had a 2-0 lead in the match after the completion of the No. 4 and No. 5 pairs. UNF answered by winning the next three matches, including two three-set matches. McGuire and Whitmire edged out Maddie From and Julia Mannisto 21-16, 17-21, 15-13 on the No. 1 court. The No. 2 duo of Alyman and Kinlaw also pulled out a three-set victory, defeating Megan Kent and Paige Wheeler 21-15, 15-21, 15-11. Meanwhile, the No. 3 pair of Tanner Garbutt and Julie Trembley took a 21-14, 21-19 victory over Sarah Blomgren and Jade Vitt.

In the exhibition with Flagler, UNF came back to win on the No. 1 and No. 2 courts after dropping the first set. At No. 1, Ambre Desaulnay and Ebony Gunn rallied for an 18-21, 21-16, 15-10 win over Caitlyn Kouach and Genel Sturgeon. At No. 2, Emily Davanzo and Kimberly Ferguson came back for an 18-21, 21-16, 15-8 victory against Sara Davis and A. Lechleidner-Rodriguez.

All of the other matches in the exhibition took two sets. Shannon McPherson and Carinne Turner played two matches, taking a 21-14, 21-8 win against Amber Peone and Rachel Bryant at No. 3. The duo also had a 21-10, 21-14 win over V. Torres-Lopez and Jenea Reddick at No. 5. The No. 4 pair of Haley Harrison and Carina Hoff defeated Megan Hooks and Tava Valmyr 21-15, 21-16.

Competition at the 2015 UNF Sand Volleyball Invitational Presented by BEACH 105.5 FM continues on Sunday with play starting at 8:30 a.m., at the St. Augustine Pier. UNF's faces Georgia State starting at 10:30 a.m., and College of Charleston at 2:30 p.m., on Sunday.
