FIRST COMPETITION | FEB. 21, 2020
SEATING CAPACITY | 300
The Cooper Beach Volleyball Complex became one of the premiere on-campus beach volleyball campus facilities in collegiate athletics when it opened February 8, 2020. “The Coop” is located just north of the UNF Softball Complex and features five courts, a digital scoreboard and bleachers that seat a capacity of 300 people.
University of North Florida beach volleyball held its inaugural season in 2012, and since then the Ospreys have hosted home events at Jacksonville Beach, Jacksonville University or in St. Augustine, Fla. Osprey beach volleyball held its inaugural contests on campus Friday, Feb. 21 when it hosted FIU, FAU, Georgia State and Mercer in a historic day for the University of North Florida.
The final push to complete the construction's funding came from the generous donation from Dwight and Christine Cooper's "Cooper Family Foundation". A resident of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., Dwight Cooper is a member of the UNF Foundation Board, former UNF assistant men's basketball coach (1991-95), founder and CEO of Hueman People Solutions and founder of the Fortune magazine featured PPR Talent Management Group located in Jacksonville Beach, Fla. The sand was provided by Vulcan Materials Company and the beach volleyball regulation netting was constructed by Robert “Butch” Hendrick and Sand Court Experts.
The Coop makes an on-campus home for a program that has seen great success in a short amount of time. UNF beach volleyball holds two ASUN Championships , three ASUN Regular Season Championships and an overall record of 158-94. North Florida has also sent individuals to the AVCA Sand Nationals during two the 2012, 2013 and 2014 campaigns.
What They’re Saying about “The Coop”
"It's exciting to see something go from a dream to a reality, and this is an example of that. This is the first on-campus facility to be built from the ground up since the track surface at Hodges Stadium in 2008, and the complex is a visual demonstration of how much of an impact that vision and philanthropic efforts can have. The Coop means so much to not just the UNF beach volleyball program, but the athletic department and university. I want to thank everyone involved in making this a reality because it's been a combined effort, and that's where there is ownership." -- Director of Athletics Lee Moon
"It was my wife that pointed out the parallels between the UNF beach volleyball program and what our experiences were on the first UNF men's basketball coaching staff. Over nearly a decade, 57 ladies have been a part of this beach volleyball program and have played without a home court. That's adversity, and now it's time for some of that adversity to end. You guys [the program] are pioneers and winners, and welcome to your new home." -- Dwight Cooper
