TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The North Florida cross country teams will run in the NCAA South Regional meet Friday morning at the Harry Pritchett Running Park.
The University of Alabama is hosting the regional meet with the women's 6k race slated to start at 9 a.m. CT with the men's 10k set to begin at 10 a.m. CT The Osprey squads are both coming off second-place finishes at the Atlantic Sun Championship and also competed on the Harry Pritchett Course in the Crimson Classic on Oct. 16.
"In many ways this has been an historic season for our program," said head coach Jeff Pigg. "It marked the first season that both the men's and women's teams finished second in the conference meet. For the men it was the team's best finish and for the women it just extended their run of strong performances at the league championship."
The UNF men's team enters Friday's race listed ninth in the latest USTFCCCA South Region rankings. Last season, UNF entered the regional ranked eighth and captured a program-best fifth place finish.
"Our men are looking forward to getting back to racing after a slight disappointment at the ASun Championships," said Pigg. "Having already made some program history with the runner-up finish in the team competition and having the individual champion, the team has a desire to do a little bit more.  Everyone is finally feeling good after some injuries, so it will be interesting to see how fit we are and how we stack up here at the end of the season. During the year we were hopeful of a top two finish and a trip to the NCAA Championships and now after navigating some health issues it will be fun to see exactly where we are.  Lone senior Justin Bryan looks to be in top form heading into the weekend.  He will be joined by Atlantic Sun Runner of the Year Logan Poteet along with All-ASun runners freshman Fynn Tim and Tyler Bennett. Mike Damato hopes to be back in top form after running at the top for the Ospreys during the regular season. Tyler Stahl and Brad Hort will also be looked to for strong perfomances."Â
The No. 11-ranked Osprey women's squad looked to build on their runner-up finish at the Atlantic Sun championship. The team showed improvement all season long and hope to cap off the year with another strong showing.
"The women look to improve on last year's 12th place finish," added Pigg. "The Top 7 have been training well and Eden Meyer continues to run up front. Alexis Irwin and Lauren Gonzales hope to cap off their cross country careers with season best races. Additionally, freshmen Audrey Carpenter and Emily Kerns are set to finish out their successful rookie seasons with strong races." Â
The top two finishing teams and top four individual runners not on an advancing team will qualify for the NCAA Championship meet on Nov. 21 in Louisville, Ky.
