JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The North Florida men's cross country team posted a program best runner-up finish Friday morning in the 2015 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship highlighted by freshman Logan Poteet's sweep of A-Sun Runner and Freshman of the Year honors.
Poteet, a rookie from Marietta, Ga., posted a personal best time of 24:38 over the 8k course at the Hayt Golf Learning Center to top the field by six seconds. His time marked the fastest for an Osprey runner at the conference championship and his finish was the best finish at the event in program history. In addition, Poteet became the first UNF cross country athlete to earn Atlantic Sun Runner or Freshman of the Year.
Sophomore Tyler Bennett, freshman Fynn Timm and senior Justin Bryan all garnered second-team all-conference honors after finishing eighth, ninth and 12th, respectively. Timm also earned a spot on the league's All-Freshman team with his strong showing.
Bennett posted a time of 25:18, with Timm running a personal best 25:27 and Bryan closing his A-Sun career with a season best time of 25:38. Junior Michael Damato rounded out the scoring for UNF, finishing 15th in 25:52.
"Overall this was the best conference performance that we've had as a program with both teams finishing second," said head coach Jeff Pigg. "We came into the season wanting and expecting to compete for a championship. We were third last year after being fifth the year before and finished second this year so we are getting better but still not where we want to be. It's a little disappointing but give Lipscomb credit because they ran well and earned it. Logan's performance sort of softens the blow a little bit. That was an exciting moment for our team and the fans that were out here watching the Ospreys. It was great to see another freshman, Fynn Timm, run well and I'm really happy that Justin had a great race in his final home appearance. All in all it was a nice morning. Hopefully, this finish leaves our guys motivated to know that we can compete for championships but now need to go out and win one."
As a team, UNF scored 45 points marking the best total in program history while the second place finish bettered the team's previous best showing of third accomplished last year and in 2009.
North Florida will now begin preparation for the 2015 NCAA South Regional scheduled for Nov. 13 in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
