JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The North Florida cross country teams welcome the rest of the Atlantic Sun Conference for the league championship meet Friday morning at the Hayt Golf Learning Center golf course. The men's 8k race starts at 8:30 a.m. followed by the women's 5k at 9:30 a.m.
"We are very excited about hosting the conference meet on Friday," said head coach Jeff Pigg. "We have a great course and look forward to competing for Atlantic Sun Championships here at home in front of friends and family. Both teams head into the meet ranked second by the league coaches and we hope to beat that by one spot. It's been a good year and we are running our best across the board right now."
The UNF men enter the race ranked 9th in the latest USTFCCCA South Region poll. The Ospreys have finished in the Top 5 at two of three events this fall including a fifth-place finish at the Crimson Classic on Oct. 16 in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Junior Michael Damato has been the team's top finisher in every race highlighted by a season best 24:57 at the Mt. Dew Invitational. North Florida finished a program best third at last year's championship.
"It should be a very exciting men's race as we think we match up well with Lipscomb, who's ranked 7th in the South Region and have beaten us twice this season," added Pigg. "We have nothing to lose and a championship to race for on our home course. Michael Damato has been our leader all year, while Tyler Bennett, Brad Hort and Tyler Stahl have all had good seasons so far. I know that lone senior, Justin Bryan, will run great in his final Atlantic Sun meet. Newcomers Fynn Timm and Logan Poteet are having very good freshman campaigns as well. We feel like our team is poised to run well."
The women's race features a trio of regionally ranked squads led by Lipscomb at No. 3 along with No. 10 North Florida and No. 12 FGCU. The Osprey women look to continue to build on a solid ninth-place finish two weeks ago at the competitive Crimson Classic. Sophomore Eden Meyer has led the way for the team at all three races highlighted by an individual title Sept. 5 in UNF's home meet run on the same course. Meyer's best time of the season was a 17:39 at the Greater Louisville Classic.Â
"We have a young women's team," Pigg said. "I'm looking forward to our two seniors, Alexis Irwin and Lauren Gonzalez, having strong races in their final Atlantic Sun competitions. Eden Meyer has been solid all season and really likes running at home and will be a contender up front. Freshmen Audrey Carpenter and Emily Kerns have also been running well for us. We are ready to get on the course and compete."
Admission for the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship is free. Spectator parking is available on the side of the roads leading to the Hayt Golf Learning Center, as well as in a designated portion of the Herbert University Center parking lot.
