TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Racing on the course that will host the NCAA South Regional in a month, the North Florida Cross Country teams both claimed Top 10 finishes at the Crimson Classic held at the Harry Pritchett Running Park. The UNF men finished fifth, while the women's team claimed a ninth-place showing.
"I'm very proud of our performance today with well over half our team running the fastest times of their careers," said head coach Jeff Pigg. "We had several runners best their career marks by over two minutes. We saw dramatic time improvements over last year's times on the same course, so we are definitely getting better as a team. These performances send us home ready to work hard over the next two weeks with hope of running even better at the Atlantic Sun Championships."
On the men's side, junior Michael Damato was the squad's top finisher clocking a time of 25:00 en route to claiming a 16th-place showing. Freshman Logan Poteet posted a personal best 25:01 to finish 18th while Tyler Stahl was 37th in a personal record time of 25:32. Freshman Fynn Timm and sophomore Bradley Langenberg both finished in personal bests 25:48 to round out the scoring finishers for the Ospreys.
"We were particularly impressed by Logan Poteet who ran very well in just his second collegiate race," added Pigg. "Mike Damato had another solid race for us leading the way, while Bradley Langenberg ran two minutes faster than last year, which is great to see his hard work paying off."Â
For the women, sophomore standout Eden Meyer again led the way finishing 36th in a time of 17:56, while senior Lauren Gonzalez posted a personal best 18:11 on her way to finishing 56th. Fellow senior Alexis Irwin was the team's third finisher running a season best time of 18:20.53 (69th) followed closely by freshman Audrey Carpenter with a personal best 18:20.59 (70th). Freshman Emily Kerns completed the list of scoring runners for the Ospreys finishing 87th in a personal best 18:40.
"We had a solid race from our top women's runners," Pigg continued. "Eden again led the way followed by Lauren Gonzalez, who bettered her career mark by over 30 seconds. Alexis Irwin continues to improve and freshmen Audrey Carpenter and Emily Kerns both ran well."
The North Florida Cross Country teams now turn their focus to the Atlantic Sun Championships slated for Oct. 30 at UNF's Hayt Golf Learning Center course.
