GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The North Florida cross country teams return to competitive running Saturday morning at the 26th annual Mt. Dew Invitational hosted by the University of Florida at the Mark Bostick Golf Course.
The event begins with 27 collegiate men's teams racing in the 8K race, set to start at 7:55 a.m. On the women's side, 29 schools are scheduled to run a 5K at 8:30 a.m.
"The Mt. Dew will be good opportunity for our teams to race against tougher competition," said head coach Jeff Pigg. "We are rounding into better shape, so we excited about running at this meet. It is always a highly competitive meet that features several strong regional teams including Florida, Georgia Tech, UCF and USF along with other Atlantic Sun squads like FGCU and Kennesaw. Overall, we are really looking forward to racing this weekend."
The UNF men's team is currently ranked 11th in the USTFCCCA South Region following wins in each of their first two events. The Osprey men collected a fourth-place finish at last year's Mt. Dew Invitational with Michael Damato the top finisher in 29th. The women's team is coming off a team title at the 110% Invitational on Sept. 6 and look to build on a sixth place showing last year in Gainesville. Alessandra Valdes paced the Osprey women at the 2013 Mt. Dew Invitational, finishing 33rd.
In addition to the two collegiate races, four high school races will be run on Saturday. Overall, more than 100 colleges and high schools are expected to compete during the invitational. Admission and parking to the race is free. Parking will be available at the UF's Levin College of Law, located at SW 2nd Avenue and Village Drive.
Following the Mt. Dew Invitational, North Florida's next cross country meet comes on Oct. 4 at the Upstate Invitational in Spartanburg, S.C.
