JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida's Jack Findel-Hawkins pulled off a major upset in three sets during the Navy Flight Finals match, defeating USF's No. 19 Roberto Cid on the final day of the Bedford Cup at the UNF Tennis Complex.
Â
"Roberto Cid is one of the best players in the country," said head coach Mark Finnegan. "To get a win over him this early in the season is great for Jack's confidence."
Â
Playing in front on an energetic crowd, Findel-Hawkins posted a thrilling 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory to capture the competitive Navy Flight against Cid. It was Cid's first three-set match of the tournament.
Â
Monday's win marked the second time in as many days in which Findel-Hawkins upset a ranked player. He also used 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 scores to defeat No. 119 Sasha Gozun of USF.
Â
"It was really good, especially after starting off the tournament pretty shaky. To be out here and compete against some great teams . I really raised my level this weekend and hope to keep it there for the rest of the fall. It's such a great chance for the team to grow and get ready for the spring.," said Findel-Hawkins. "Especially when it goes three sets both times, you get into those positions then you have more belief you can do it. It's been a really good weekend to build on. We've got a packed schedule and got to play well every week, but it's a really good start."
Â
UNF also competed in Monday's other two championship matches. In the Gray Flight Finals, Zach Goldberg, who played a strong tournament, was unable to hold off Stetson's Graham Ball and fell 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Â
"Zach has come so far and faced so much adversity; I just couldn't be anymore prouder of him," said Finnegan. "The ability to beat some of the players that he did this weekend was amazing. He's done nothing but great things since coming back from break."
Â
In the Doubles Finals, No. 12 Cid and Gozun overtook Findel-Hawkins and Lasse Muscheites 6-2, 6-3.
Â
"Gozun and Cid are great doubles players; they're not the No. 12 team in the nation for nothing," said Finnegan. "It was a great learning experience for Lasse and we're going to get better from this.
Â
"You just can't ask for a better tournament when you host it," continued Finnegan. "We had three guys playing for championships today. Anytime that happens, it's just an extremely successful tournament. All the guys on the team brought a great attitude and great effort all weekend long."
Â
The Ospreys fall schedule continues at the 2014 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships Sept. 27-Oct. 6 held at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center at the University of Tulsa.
