DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Ashley Holton's double drove in Danica Mandarano for the game-winning run in the 12th inning and University of North Florida softball held off a rally from Bethune-Cookman to win 2-1 in 12 innings at Sunnydale Park.
It was UNF's longest game inning-wise since a 14-inning contest at Mercer on Apr. 2, 2006 during Game One of a doubleheader. It is also the longest game inning-wise in the Atlantic Sun this season. Only USC Upstate has played in double-digit innings, going 10 against Furman on Feb. 23.
For Bethune-Cookman, Wednesday's game was the longest inning-wise in program history.
The contest was originally scheduled to be a doubleheader. However, due to a delay with the umpires and impending darkness that would occur during Game Two, only one game was played.
Bethune-Cookman got out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, capitalizing on a two-out Osprey miscue and scoring Calesha Shelley from second.
The Ospreys evened the score in the fifth inning. Mandarano's single drove in Lexi Taylor of the game-tying run.
UNF and Bethune-Cookman went scoreless over the next 6.5 innings before Mandarano scored the go-ahead in the 12th. In the bottom of the 12th, Bethune-Cookman started to rally and had the bases loaded with one out. However, Mandarano caught a line drive to center field and tossed the ball to Holton covering second to turn a game-ending double play.
Kaylie Wallace was credited with the win after pitching 11.0 innings. Wallace did not allow an earned run, held Bethune-Cookman to six hits and struck out 10 batters.
Cortney Radke had the save after coming in for the final 1.0 inning and allowing one hit.
Sabrina Angiuano, who came in for the final 3.0 innings, had the loss after allowing one earned run off two hits and struck out five. Bailey Conner pitched the first 9.0 innings for the Lady Wildcats, giving up one run off six hit and also striking out five
Mandarano, Holton and Mariah Reynolds each tallied two hits for the Ospreys.
Shelley had three hits for Bethune-Cookman.
UNF continues its road swing this weekend with a three-game series at ETSU. The series begins with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m., and ends with a single game at 1 p.m., on Sunday.
