JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – University of North Florida softball continues with its road swing, playing a three-game series at ETSU this weekend. The series begins with a doubleheader on Saturday and ends with a single game on Sunday at Betty Balser Field. First pitch for both days is set for 1 p.m.
"We've been on the upswing over the last couple of weeks and pulled out a big 12-inning win over Bethune-Cookman on Wednesday," said head coach Marcie Hickey. "This is a big conference weekend for us and every series down the stretch will be critical. ETSU will be a battle on the road and we need to stay focused on playing one game at a time to be successful."
The Ospreys began their road swing on Wednesday, outlasting Bethune-Cookman 2-1 in 12 innings. It was UNF's longest game inning-wise under Hickey and the most number of innings played since Game One of a doubleheader with Mercer on Apr. 2, 2006. Danica Manadarano scored the ultimate game-winner on a double by Ashley Holton. Mandarano and Holton later teamed up in the bottom of the 12th for the game-ending double play to secure the win.
The trip to Betty Blaser Field will be the first for most of UNF's team. The Ospreys were last in Johnson City, Tenn., in 2011. Only seniors Mandarano, Cortney Radke, Mariah Reynolds, Marissa Thomas and junior Megan Mihalik were part of the 2011 Ospreys. UNF has hosted ETSU the last two seasons.
With three conference series remaining, UNF enters the weekend in seventh and is right behind Florida Gulf Coast. Only the top six teams make the Atlantic Sun Tournament in May.
ETSU began a seven-game homestand with a pair of losses to Appalachian State during a Tuesday doubleheader. The Bucs are on a five-game losing skid and have not posted a win since defeating Presbyterian 5-1 during Game Two of an Apr. 3 twinbill. Four of ETSU's five Atlantic Sun series this season have been sweeps. The Bucs swept Northern Kentucky two weeks ago, but have been swept by Florida Gulf Coast, Stetson and Lipscomb. Katie Wolff is batting a team-best .367 with a team-high 36 hits, while Jackie Baird leads the Bucs in runs (24), home runs (13) and RBI (33).
UNF leads the all-time series with ETSU 16-1. After the Bucs won the inaugural game of the series, the Ospreys have reeled off 16-straight victories and are 6-0 when playing at ETSU.
