FORT MYERS, Fla. – University of North Florida softball concludes the road portion of its regular season schedule with a three-game Atlantic Sun series at Florida Gulf Coast this weekend at the FGCU Softball Complex. The series opens with a doubleheader at 5 p.m., on Friday and finishes with a single game on Saturday at 2 p.m.
"This weekend will be a battle with a lot on the line," said head coach Marcie Hickey. "Our games with Florida Gulf Coast are always a tough fight and I expect that this weekend will be no different. We've been playing well the last few weeks and will keep continuing with our approach of taking it one game at a time."
Although no postseason determinations for UNF or Florida Gulf Coast can be made this weekend, the series will have an impact on postseason implications and the Atlantic Sun standings. With an 8-10 conference record, Florida Gulf Coast is sixth in the conference standings, just one spot ahead of the Ospreys. If UNF captures the series, the Ospreys can put themselves into a favorable position for a berth to the six-team Atlantic Sun Tournament. Although UNF does not play next weekend, it is the earliest time in which the Ospreys' postseason fate can be determined due to both Florida Gulf Coast and ETSU having six scheduled games remaining following this weekend.
UNF has won three of its last four Atlantic Sun series and took last weekend's series 2-1 at ETSU. On Monday, Kaylie Wallace became the first pitcher this season to win back-to-back Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the Week honors. Wallace went 3-0 last week with an 0.82 ERA in 25.2 innings pitched.
Meanwhile, at Wednesday night's UNF Athletics Banquet, Ashia Kerr was selected by UNF's head coaches and senior staff members as the department's Female Newcomer of the Year.
Florida Gulf Coast begins a six-game homestand with this weekend's series. The Eagles have won its last two Atlantic Sun series 2-1, including last weekend's three-game set at Jacksonville. Florida Gulf Coast used a 4-0 win last Sunday in order to claim the series with the Dolphins. Jessica Barnes, who is one of two players with an Atlantic Sun-best five triples, was tabbed Player of the Week after scoring in all five of the Eagles' games last week and recording two home runs and a double. Florida Gulf Coast also has the Atlantic Sun's top hitter in Kelsey Carpenter, who is batting .441. Carpenter is also tied for the conference lead in hits with 60.
UNF leads the all-time series 9-8 and won the last meeting 2-1 during an elimination game at the Atlantic Sun Tournament on May 10, 2013. That was the only game to take place between UNF and Florida Gulf Coast in 2013 after the regular season series was rained out.
