JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -- The University of North Florida women's tennis team will kick off its postseason play this weekend, as it takes on third-seeded USC Upstate in the Atlantic Sun Tournament Semifinals at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.
The Ospreys, who enter the tournament as the second seed by way of their 7-1 record in Atlantic Sun play this season, had six players named to various All-Atlantic Sun teams at Thursday evening's conference banquet, including senior Lorena Aviles receiving the A-Sun Player of the Year award.
USC Upstate reached the tournament semifinals with a marathon victory in Friday afternoon's opening round, as the Spartans came from behind to take down sixth-seeded Kennesaw State, 4-3.
The Spartans tallied a 14-7 regular-season record in 2013, including a 5-3 mark in conference play. They ended their season with five wins in their last seven matches prior to Friday's victory in the tournament's first round. At Thursday's conference banquet, Upstate picked up a pair of postseason honors, as Constanze Kuerten was named to the A-Sun All-Freshman Team, while Julie Bell was selected for the A-Sun All-Academic team.
Earlier this year, UNF traveled north for a match on the Spartans' home court, where the Ospreys prevailed 4-0 in a weather-shortened match. In that contest, Aviles, senior Melanie Aguirre and sophomore Marina Cunningham all picked up singles wins, before sophomore Taylor Hollander clinched the match for UNF.
The Ospreys enter Saturday's match having won 10 of their last 11 matches, including five straight leading up to the tournament. A trio of UNF players has won at least five straight singles matches, as Aviles and Aguirre have each won five, while freshman Mariella Calderon has triumphed in her last six outings.
Junior Simona Weymar and sophomore Rebeca Pereira have also been outstanding, as the duo has won all nine of its matches at the No. 2 doubles position this season.
The winner of tomorrow's match will face the winner of Saturday's other semifinal in Sunday's championship match, between top-seeded East Tennessee State and No. 4 Stetson. That contest will take place prior to the Ospreys' match and will begin at 9 a.m. The championship will begin at 10 a.m. on Sunday morning.
