Atlantic Sun Interview with Lorena Aviles
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -- The University of North Florida women's tennis team advanced to its fourth straight Atlantic Sun Women's Tennis Tournament Final on Saturday afternoon, blanking USC Upstate, 4-0 at ETSU Tennis Complex.
“The girls brought energy on every court and dominated today,” Head Coach Audra Cohen said. “USC Upstate has proven that they have the ability to fight to the end on every court and climb back into matches. Today we didn't give them that opportunity.”
UNF started the day by making quick work of the doubles point, getting victories at No. 1 and 2 to take an early 1-0 lead.
Junior Simona Weymar and sophomore Rebeca Pereira rolled to an 8-1 win at No. 2, giving the Ospreys a quick advantage. The victory raised the duo's record in 2013 to 10-0, and the pair has won 21 of its last 23 matches together, dating back to 2012.
Minutes later, seniors Lorena Aviles and Melanie Aguirre cruised to an 8-2 win at No. 1, their eighth victory in 11 matches, to clinch the doubles point for UNF.
The Ospreys carried the momentum from doubles into singles play, winning the first set in all six matches and grabbing the first three wins to polish off the third-seeded Spartans.
Aguirre doubles UNF's advantage early, blanking her opponent in the opening set en route to a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 6. It was the senior's sixth consecutive win for the Ospreys. Sophomore Marina Cunningham was next, as she improved her dual match record to 14-4 with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 3.
As she did in the regular season matchup between the two teams, sophomore Taylor Hollander provided the clinching point for the Ospreys, as she rolled to a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 4. Hollander also stands at 14-4 on the year following the victory.
Though the Ospreys led on all three other singles courts, the remaining matches were left unfinished.
With the win, the Ospreys advance to tomorrow's A-Sun Tournament Final, scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on Sunday morning. In the finals, UNF will face top-seeded ETSU, who advanced past the semifinals by way of a 4-0 win over Stetson, the fourth seed.
In the regular season, the Ospreys fell 4-0 to ETSU, though that match was played indoors at the Bristol Racquet Club.
“I'm proud of the way we maintained confident energy from start to finish today,” Cohen said. “The girls have been looking forward to another opportunity against ETSU. They've earned it and they're ready for them.”
