JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -- The top-seeded University of North Florida men's tennis team will begin postseason play on Saturday afternoon, as it faces fourth-seeded Florida Gulf Coast in the Atlantic Sun Tournament Semifinals at 3 p.m.
The Ospreys carry a perfect 8-0 record in A-Sun play, as well as a 14-7 overall mark, into the tournament. At the end-of-year conference banquet on Thursday, UNF had six players named to various All-Atlantic Sun teams, while senior Moritz Buerchner was named the A-Sun's Men's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Florida Gulf Coast, the fourth seed in the tournament, reached the semifinals by way of a 4-2 win over No. 5 USC Upstate in Friday's opening round.
Prior to the tournament, the Eagles had tallied a 10-10 record on the year, including a 4-4 mark in conference play. At Thursday's conference banquet, sophomore Jordi Vives became the first player in FGCU history to be named to the All-Atlantic Sun First Team.
UNF faced the Eagles just two weeks ago in a match at UNF Tennis Complex, one in which the Ospreys escaped with a 4-3 victory in their last home match of the season, despite a rash of injuries. In that contest, UNF swept the doubles point before getting crucial singles wins from sophomore Timo Kranz and seniors Leonardo Nahar and Julien Belair.
The Ospreys enter the conference tournament having won 12 of their last 13 contests, including a run of four consecutive wins to end the regular season. Belair enters the weekend riding a hot streak for the record books, having won 13 straight singles matches, a new UNF record. Freshman Bernardo Craveiro, who was named to the A-Sun All-Freshman Team on Thursday, has triumphed in four straight matches for UNF.
Buerchner, senior Daniel Sotomarino, and Belair--the Ospreys' No. 1, 2 and 3 players, respectively--were all named to the All-Atlantic Sun First Team, the first time in UNF history that three men's tennis players have been given the conference's top honors in the same year.
The winner of tomorrow's match will take on the victor in Saturday's other semifinal, where No. 2 East Tennessee State will take on sixth-seeded Lipscomb, who advanced after upsetting No. 3 Stetson on Friday afternoon, in the Atlantic Sun Championship. That match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
