JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida women's tennis team will be on the road this weekend, as it concludes its 2013 regular season with matches at Northern Kentucky and Lipscomb on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
The Ospreys are fresh off a stellar weekend, as they knocked off Stetson and Florida Gulf Coast in back-to-back days, winning both matches 6-1 to lift their 2013 record to 12-4, including a 5-1 mark in Atlantic Sun Conference play.
Northern Kentucky, who UNF will face at 11:30 a.m. on Friday morning, is yet to find its first Division I victory since joining the A-Sun in the fall of 2012, and sit at 0-14. Last weekend, the Norse dropped a pair of 7-0 decisions at USC Upstate and East Tennessee State.
Lipscomb, the Ospreys opponent at 11 a.m., has accumulated a 7-13 record in 2013, including a 2-5 mark in A-Sun play. However, the Bisons have won three of the their last five home matches.
The Ospreys have been led this year by their top two players, as senior Lorena Aviles has tallied a 13-3 record playing only at the No. 1 position, while junior Simona Weymar has racked up an 11-3 mark playing almost exclusively at the No. 2 spot. The two upperclassmen have gone a combined 8-2 record in A-Sun matches this season.
Weymar has also paired with sophomore Rebeca Pereira to go 8-0 in No. 2 doubles matches this season. Dating back to last year, the duo is a perfect 13-0 in A-Sun doubles matches when playing together.
With the Atlantic Sun Tournament just a week away, UNF enters the weekend in sole position of second place in the league with a 5-1 record, just one game behind first-place ETSU. With their next win, the Ospreys will clinch a top-two finish in the conference, along with the accompanying bye into the semifinals of next week's A-Sun Tournament.
