CRESTIEW HILLS, Ky. -- The University of North Florida wrapped up a first-round bye in next week's Atlantic Sun Tournament on Friday afternoon, as it blanked Northern Kentucky on the road, 6-1.
Due to the threat of inclement weather, the match began with singles play. The Ospreys were able to sweep all six matchups earn the shutout.
"Today the conditions were rough, It was very cold and windy; clearly not the best tennis weather," Head Coach Audra Cohen said. "The girls did a great job of getting the job done in spite of that."
Senior Lorena Aviles earned a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles to lead the way, while junior Simona Weymar earned just the second shutout of her career at No. 2 with a 6-0, 6-0 win. Weymar has lost just a single game in her last two singles matches.
Sophomore Marina Cunningham battled to a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 3, while sophomore Taylor Hollander grabbed a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4. Hollander has dropped just a single set in her last four matches, all wins.
Senior Melanie Aguirre rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 5, giving her four consecutive wins, tied for her longest streak of the season. The senior has not lost a set in any of the four victories. Freshman Mariella Calderon grabbed her fifth straight win, the longest streak on the team, with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at No. 6.
The victory moves UNF to 13-4 on the season, including a 6-1 mark in A-Sun play. The Ospreys have clinched the No. 2 seed in next weekend's six-team A-Sun Tournament, giving them a bye into Saturday's semifinals, where they will face the winner of the 3-6 matchup.
