JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida men's tennis team faces a pair of stern tests in Atlantic Sun Conference play this weekend, as it heads north for matches at East Tennessee State and USC Upstate on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
Though the Ospreys were in Atlanta, Ga. this past Monday for a match at then-No. 75 Georgia State, that contest was cxancelled due to rain. In it's last two official contests, UNF got off to a 2-0 start in A-Sun play with a pair of 7-0 wins over Kennesaw State and Mercer.
The Ospreys will face a rematch of last year's Atlantic Sun Tournament finals in their first match of the weekend when they face ETSU at 11 a.m. on Friday. The Bucs will be playing their first match since March 1, as they open up a new home facility against the Ospreys with a record of 5-4 thus far in 2013.
ETSU has played five nationally-ranked foes so far this year, going 2-3 against the top 75 en route to a No. 68 ranking in this week's ITA National Team Rankings, the highest of any A-Sun team. The Bucs have succeeded with their depth, as no ETSU singles player or doubles pair cracked the most recent ITA National Singles or Doubles Rankings.
USC Upstate, who UNF will face at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning, has won two consecutive matches to lift its 2013 record to 6-7. The Spartans also boast a robust 4-1 record in home matches this season.
A trio of Spartans cracked the most recent national rankings, as Matthias Kidler sits at No. 109 in the singles rankings, while Gonzalo Blanco and Yvon Haessig sit at No. 77 in doubles.
The Ospreys enter the weekend riding a six-match winning streak that includes victories over nationally-ranked Miami and South Alabama. UNF hs gotten off to a good start as of late, winning its last seven doubles points, dating back to a February 16 loss at No. 65 Georgia Tech. The Ospreys have won 16 of their last 17 completed doubles matches.
UNF has a quartet of players who have won at least four matches in a row, as seniors Daniel Sotomarino and Pedro Davisson each have four consecutive victories, while senior Julien Belair and sophomore Norbert Nemcsek both own team-best six-match winning streaks.
