JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida men's tennis team will test itself against some of the nation's best talent this weekend, as it heads to Charlottesville, Va. to compete in ITA Kick-Off Weekend, the first event of the Ospreys' 2013 season.
The Ospreys return all but one member of last year's squad that finished second in the Atlantic Sun Conference and enter their opening weekend of play ranked 63rd in the country.
A core group of five seniors--Moritz Buerchner, Julien Belair, Pedro Davisson, Leonardo Nahar and Daniel Sotomarino--will look to lead UNF to a sterling 2013 campaign. Joining them will be a pair of sophomores in Norbert Nemcsek and Timo Kranz, as well as freshmen Bernardo Craveiro and Mark Hamill.
This veteran group will face a pair of ranked teams this weekend in Charlottesville, beginning with the host Virginia Cavaliers, the top-ranked team in the country, in a 6 p.m. match on Friday evening. The Ospreys face a stern test in No. 1 Virginia, as the Cavaliers enter 2013 with three singles players ranked in the top seven nationally, as well as three top-ten doubles teams.
UNF and Virginia will be joined in Charlottesville by No. 55 Arkansas and No. 62. Georgia State, who will face off at 2 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
The winner of Friday's matches will square off in a 6 p.m. bout on Saturday evening, with the winner earning a berth in the ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championship. The remaining two squads face each other at 2 p.m. on Saturday in the consolation match.
