Men’s Soccer Drops Match to UCF

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's soccer team fell to in-state foe UCF, 4-0, on Saturday night at Hodges Stadium. The match was the first home match for the Ospreys since Sunday, Sept. 2 – a 1-0 shutout victory over Florida Atlantic.
North Florida battled hard in the match taking 11 shots compared to 14 by UCF. The Knights took 10 shots on goal compared to just three by the Ospreys, but UNF had several shots ricochet off of the post and the cross bar in the course of the match.
Defensively, the Ospreys' goalkeeper Kyle Nasta continued his solid play between the posts. The true freshman, who leads the nation in saves per match, recorded six saves in the contest to increase his total for the year to 45 in six matches (7.5 sv/match).
Mauricio Valderruten led the North Florida offensive attack. The sophomore recorded two shots, including a pair of shots on goal. Teddy Mulamba had two shots, while Luis Daniel Camejo boasted a shot on goal.
UCF was the first team to scratch the scoreboard, netting a goal in the eighth. The Knights' Deshorn Brown collected a rebound out of a scrum and his kick was just under the reach of a diving goalie from six yards out to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.
Just before halftime, UCF's McKauly took a long pass down field. His initial shot was blocked by a diving Nasta, but McKauly was able to pick up his own rebound to finish on an open net from six yards out to send the match into halftime 2-0.
The Knights added a pair of goals in the second half to provide the final margin. Romario Williams dribbled 20 yards across the box and shot from the right side to the back left corner of the goal in the 54th minute. The final goal came in the 72nd minute as Jeff Michaud dribbled through the defense and hit the post, but Malcolm Reed scooped up the rebound for the open-net goal.
The Ospreys made a late push taking a bevy of shots in the final minutes. Camilo Garcia's shot was just wide of the goal, while Mulumba and Valderruten each hit the post with late shots. The tandem of Mulumba and Valderruten also had a shot a piece that were thwarted by the UCF goalie Sebastian Evers.
North Florida returns to action on next weekend (Oct. 5-7) as the Ospreys open the Atlantic Sun Conference season on the road. UNF kicks off A-Sun play with a mactch against East Tennessee State on Friday, Oct. 5 at 7:00 p.m. before taking on USC Upstate in a 1:00 p.m. match on Sunday, Oct. 7.
