JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's soccer team is poised to begin play in the Atlantic Sun Conference with a pair of road matches. The Ospreys open up conference play against East Tennessee State on Friday night (7:00 p.m.), before squaring off against USC Upstate on Sunday afternoon (1:00 p.m.).
Live stats and ASun.TV will be available for free for both matches.
North Florida enters the weekend 3-6-0 overall. East Tennessee State is 4-5-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the A-Sun. The Bucs dropped their first conference match of the season at home, 2-1, to Mercer on Sept. 30. USC Upstate is 2-5-1 entering the weekend, but will face Jacksonville in a match on Friday night before playing North Florida.
The Ospreys enter the weekend with a 1-3-0 record away from Hodges Stadium, defeating Georgia Southern 4-3 in a road match on Sept. 8. ETSU is 3-1-0 at home, but fell in its last home match to the Bears. The Spartans have played just two home matches this season, winning one and losing one.
North Florida vs. East Tennessee State:
ETSU holds a 3-1-0 advantage in the all-time series. The Ospreys won the first meeting between the two teams – a 2-1 decision in Johnson City, Tenn. on Oct. 3, 2008. Every meeting between the two teams has been a one-point decision, including last season's 3-2 double overtime victory for the Bucs.
Last season trailing 1-0, the Ospreys used a goal from Enrique Haeussler (2010-11) to knot the score at one apiece in the 23rd minute. North Florida attempted a corner kick that was headed out by the ETSU defense. Haeussler picked up the loose volley from 25 yards out and put the ball over the goalkeepers hands and under the crossbar for his first goal of the season. Haeussler's second goal of the season in the 78th minute put the Ospreys in front, 2-1. The striker bent a free kick around a wall of defenders and put the ball in the upper right corner for the go-ahead goal.
The Bucs were able to score the equalizer in the 89th minute of the match. ETSU benefited from a foul inside the box that resulted in a penalty kick that Aaron Schoenfeld converted. The score remained tied 2-2 at the end of regulation. The two teams were unable to score in the first overtime. ETSU took three shots in the first overtime compared to just one by the Ospreys, but UNF's defense was able to keep both shots on goal out of the net and force a second overtime.
ETSU's Theo Yang broke the tie 25 seconds into the second overtime. The ball bounced around in the box before Itode Fubara directed it to Yang whose shot was deflected into the goal for the match-winner.
North Florida vs. USC Upstate:
North Florida and USC Upstate have met on the soccer pitch 15 times with the Spartans holding a 9-5-1 advantage. The Ospreys won four consecutive matches before falling in last year's meeting, 2-0 at Hodges Stadium. UNF won the last two meetings between the two teams in Spartanburg, S.C., 2-1 and 3-0, respectively.
Last season's match was a physical contest with the two teams combining for 23 fouls, including 16 by the Spartans. The Ospreys were hurt in the 72nd minute as a red card was issued after a hard slide tackle. North Florida was forced to play the final 18 minutes of regulation a man down.
In the 75th minute, USC Upstate broke the scoreless tie with a goal by John Kadane. The Spartans' Grant Kercher sent a through ball to Kadane who shot the ball from 15 yards out and it deflected into the goal past the keeper.
The Spartans used a goal in the 89th minute of the match to provide the final margin of victory. USC Upstate's Dylan Hoop netted his team-leading fourth goal of the season. Hoop collected the ball at midfield and beat the last North Florida defender and was able to score on the goalie 1-on-1.
