DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – University of North Florida softball rallied late in Game One to take a 3-2 nine-inning win over Bethune-Cookman, but the Ospreys were tripped up by the Lady Wildcats 9-1 in five innings in a Wednesday afternoon doubleheader at Sunnydale Park.
UNF and Bethune-Cookman were scoreless through Game One's first four-and-a-half innings. The Lady Wildcats struck first in the bottom of the fifth. With two runners in scoring position, Sabrina Ferguson had a one-out single that drove in both runners to make it a 2-0 game in favor of Bethune-Cookman.
UNF fought back and took advantage of two seventh-inning errors, including one to start the inning, to tie the game. With two outs and runners at second and third, the Lady Wildcats had their second miscue of the inning, allowing both Danica Manadarano and Megan David to score and make it a 2-2 game.
The Ospreys' rally was complete in the top of the ninth. Kelly Dill made her way around the bases, scoring the game-winner on a single by Brittany Hendrix.
Kaylie Wallace came in for the final 4.2 innings and got the win. Wallace record five strikeouts and gave up two hits. Kayla Goff, who started the game, threw eight strikeouts during her 4.1 innings in the circle.
Shanel Tolbert pitched all 9.0 innings in the loss. She allowed three runs – only one earned – off eight hits. Tolbert also fanned three batters.
In Game Two, Bethune-Cookman jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Lady Wildcats' first run came on a passed ball, while a wild pitch allowed for Aurelia Gamch to score the game's second run. In the next at-bat, UNF attempt to get Ferguson out at home, but was unable to as Bethune-Cookman went up 3-0.
UNF cut into the Lady Wildcats' lead in the third. Lauren Pollack's single was enough for Kaley Brosky to score from second and make it a 3-1 game.
However, Bethune-Cookman added to its lead in both the third and fourth innings. With runners in scoring position, Kelsey Rodney sent a two-run single to center field as the Lady Wildcats led 5-1 after the third. In the fourth with the bases loaded, Ferguson had a one-out single to right field that drove in two runs. Another Osprey wild pitch resulted in Bethune-Cookman scoring a run to go up 8-1. Then an Osprey error brought home Ferguson for what ultimately was the game's final run.
Cortney Radke received the loss after allowing five runs – three earned – off four hits in 2.1 innings. She also struck out four.
In her second appearance on the day, Tolbert allowed one run off five hits in 5.0 innings to get the win.
UNF returns to action on Friday when the Ospreys host ETSU in an Atlantic Sun doubleheader at the UNF Softball Complex. First pitch of the twinbill is set for 4 p.m.
