JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida softball returns to its home field at the UNF Softball Complex for the first time in two weeks this weekend when the Ospreys welcome ETSU on Friday and USC Upstate on Saturday for a pair of Atlantic Sun doubleheaders.
The Ospreys are coming off a mid-week split at Bethune-Cookman to conclude a six-game road swing. In UNF's last home A-Sun doubleheader, the Ospreys swept Belmont on Apr. 1, defeating the Bruins 5-4 in the first game and then 8-0 in a six-inning Game Two.
This weekend's doubleheaders will be the first of two-straight home weekends for the Ospreys. UNF has not played at home for two weekends in a row since hosting the two Osprey Invitationals the first two weekends in March.
ETSU will be looking for its first A-Sun win of the season this weekend and attempt to snap a seven-game losing skid. The Lady Bucs have not won since sweeping a non-conference doubleheader against Western Carolina on Mar. 28. Since then, ETSU has dropped A-Sun series to Kennesaw State, Mercer and USC Upstate and are coming off a 13-9 mid-week setback at Appalachian State on Wednesday. Casey Horner enters the weekend leading the Lady Bucs with a .379 batting average. Horner has a team-best 36 hits, seven homers and 24 RBI.
The Lady Bucs won the first-ever meeting between UNF and ETSU 4-0 on Mar. 24, 2006, but UNF has won 11 straight since then and has sweep ETSU in the last five doubleheaders. In last year's series, UNF won 7-1 and 5-2 in Johnson City, Tenn.
USC Upstate sits second in the Atlantic Sun standings and is the only A-Sun team with more than 30 wins on the season. The Spartans are among the nation's top teams in batting (.334), pitching (1.65 ERA) and fielding (.977). Multiple Spartans are also among the nation's top players in the latest set of NCAA statistics that were released on Monday. Among them is pitcher Hannah Alexander, who has 20 wins, nine shutouts and a 1.44 ERA on the season. Alexander has recorded 166 strikeouts in 145.1 innings. Meanwhile, USC Upstate has three players hitting above .390 on the season in Shellie Robinson (.422), Hayley Reinfeld (.398) and Cheyenne Griffin (.391). Robinson is one of the A-Sun's top offensive threats with leading the conference in runs (39) and home runs (12) while having 49 hits, 30 RBI and 11 doubles.
The UNF-USC Upstate series dates back to the 1995 season when both teams were Division II programs. UNF holds a 16-12 advantage in the series, but USC Upstate has won eight of the last nine meetings and swept last year's doubleheader 1-0 and 5-1 in Spartanburg on Apr. 1, 2011.
First pitch for Friday's doubleheader with ETSU is set for 4 p.m., while first pitch for Saturday's twinbill is scheduled for 1 p.m.
