JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A string of six-straight road games for the University of North Florida softball team comes to an end on Wednesday afternoon when the Ospreys visit Bethune-Cookman for a mid-week doubleheader at Sunnyland Park.
Wednesday's doubleheader will be the third and fourth meetings between UNF and Bethune-Cookman this season. The two teams played twice at the Dot Richardson Collegiate Softball Invitational in Clermont, Fla., Feb. 10-12. Both of the two games were slugfests with UNF and Bethune-Cookman combining for 13 runs and 23 hits on Feb. 10 and then 11 runs and 19 hits on Feb. 12. In the first game, UNF led from the start and was up 7-0 midway through the fifth. Bethune-Cookman used a five-run, bottom of the fifth to make it a two run game. However, Mariah Reynolds scored in the top of the seventh and UNF silenced the Lady Wildcats in the bottom half of the inning to win 8-5. In the second game, UNF erupted for a five-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning to come back and beat Bethune-Cookman 7-4.
UNF will attempt to rebound from a 1-3 performance during last weekend's road trip to Kennesaw State and Mercer. The Ospreys dropped the first three games of the weekend before holding on for a 2-1 win over the Bears on Saturday. Head coach Marcie Hickey enters the doubleheader a step closer to the 100-win mark at UNF. Hickey has led the Ospreys to 97 wins in her four years and is the all-time winningest Division I coach at UNF.
Bethune-Cookman brings a six-game winning streak into Wednesday's doubleheader and has won 13 of its last 14 games. In the last four weeks, the Lady Wildcats' only setback was an 8-0 loss at Jacksonville on Mar. 27. However, since that loss, Bethune-Cookman has outscored its opponents 48-7 and recorded three shutouts. Michelle Banuelos-Smith is batting a team-best .380 with 46 hits, 14 doubles, six home runs and 27 RBI on the season. Karina Romero, who hit .667 against the Ospreys earlier this season, is second with a .340 batting average.
UNF holds an 8-3 advantage in the all-time series. Last year's doubleheader was split between the two teams with the Ospreys taking Game One 11-3 and Bethune-Cookman winning Game Two 5-1.
First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 2 p.m.
