Men's tennis posts 6-1 win over Jacksonville
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The 2007-08 season could not have had a better ending for the University of North Florida men's tennis team.
The Ospreys (11-9, 5-5 Atlantic Sun Conference) closed its year with a convincing 6-1 win over cross- town rival Jacksonville on Wednesday at the UNF Tennis Complex. The victory gave UNF a point in the season-long all sports competition SunTrust River City Rumble, a race that JU now leads 8-7.
"It was great to finish the season with a win," said head coach Igal Buberman. "The guys showed up ready to play and took care of business. We are pleased with our season. It was a rough ride, but we achieved many of the goals that we set up at the beginning of the fall."
UNF dominated the Dolphins (7-11, 5-5) from start to finish, beginning with doubles. Senior Yuiti Lopes closed out his career on the top, teaming with freshman Alejandro Argumendo for an 8- 3 No. 1 doubles win over JU's Victor Vaz and Alberto Lopez.
Junior Javier Ferrin and freshman Adrian Escarate clinched the crucial doubles point in a no-sweat 8-2 No. 3 doubles victory over JU's Marcos Oliveira and Vinicious Craveiro.
The song remained the same in singles, with the Ospreys winning every match and all but one in straight sets. Senior Eduardo Pereira went out a winner in his final match with a 6-2, 6-0 crushing of JU's Jordi Ballester in the No. 1 match. Pereira finished his season with a 15-3 record and closed out his season winning three of four.
Ferrin made quick work of Vaz in No. 2 singles, posting a 6-2, 6-0 win to close his season with a 14-6 record. In the No. 3 match, sophomore Kurt Gattiker battled his way to a 6-4, 6-1, win over Oliveira.
Freshman Graham Edgar closed his season with his second win in a row, coming out on top of a 6-3, 6-3, decision against Lopez in No. 5 singles. Freshman Adrian Escarate showed his will to win in his No. 6 match against Craveiro when he came back to seal the match after being shut out in the second set. Escarate picked up the 6-1, 0-6, 6-4, win to end his season at 10-6.
The win helped UNF clinch a share of fifth place in the A-Sun and helped the Ospreys improve to 3-0 over JU since joining the A-Sun in 2006.
"Personally, I want to thank Rodrigo (Puebla) and Julie (Stoppeli) for their help as assistants," Buberman said. "I also want to thank my seniors - Dudu (Eduardo Pereira) for giving me a very solid season at No. 1; Yuiti (Lopes) for showing tremendous leadership and sportsmanship on and off the courts; and Javi (Javier Ferrin) for his commitment to the program and for doing a very good job as a captain. Finally, I would like to thank all the people that supported the team and that followed all the results. Go Ospreys."
