JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Runs came in bunches Tuesday night for the University of North Florida softball team in a doubleheader sweep of cross-town rival Jacksonville University, earning UNF a pair of points in the SunTrust River City Rumble standings.
UNF (33-20, 10-6 A-Sun) put together a three-run inning and four-run inning to take the opener 7-0 before posting eight runs with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning en route to a 9-1 win in the nightcap.
“We hit the ball well today and were well prepared for their pitching,” UNF head coach Sonya Wilmoth said. “We put the ball in play and put pressure on them, and then we finally got the bats going in the second game.”
With the two victories UNF has earned double-digit wins for the first time in conference play and jumps to second place in the A-Sun behind
Ashley Battaglia led the Lady Osprey offense with four hits on the day, while UNF pitcher Devyn Findley pitched a complete-game shutout in the opener and helped herself by driving in a pair of runs.
Findley got UNF going in the opener with a double down the left field line that plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, giving UNF a 3-0 advantage. That's where the score stayed until the bottom of the fifth when UNF took advantage of a JU error to score four runs, three of which were unearned.
That was enough for Findley (18-10) who reached the 200 strikeout plateau, working seven innings while allowing four hits and striking out eight.
JU (19-31, 5-11 A-Sun) put together its best rally in the top of the sixth when it loaded the bases with nobody out. Findley, however, worked out of the jam, not allowing a run to score.
Heather Hyde and Battaglia each had two hits to lead UNF's offensive cause, while Katie Kelly collected three of the four JU hits.
The Dolphins finally scratched the scoreboard in game two when Sara Gordon delivered a two-out single to drive home Kelly McKeon in the top of the second, staking Shannon Jenson to a 1-0 lead.
Jenson (9-12) was in control through the first three innings and looked to be headed back to the dugout with minimal damage in the fourth. Jenson allowed a one-out hit to Williams, but was able to retire Findley with a strikeout one batter later. That would be her last out of the night as she walked Pulling before hitting Kacie McCloud to load the bases. Laura Williams drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk before three of the next four batters reached on hits to chase Jenson from the game.
Ashley Parenteau started the parade of hits with a single that drove home two before Kara Rutenbar collected her first hit of the day, doubling down the left field line to plate another two runs. Battaglia singled through the legs of Jenson to finally end her day before
Parenteau finally ended the game for UNF via the mercy rule in the bottom of the fifth, doubling to left field to bring home McCloud and give UNF a 9-1 advantage.
Tori Ahern (14-8) was the benefactor of the UNF offense. The senior gave up only one run on four hits and struck out three in four innings of work. Findley came on in the fifth for an inning of work, surrendering one hit.
Parenteau, Williams and Battaglia all had two hits for the Lady Ospreys, while Gordon countered with a pair of hits for JU.
UNF returns to the field Wednesday when it travels to Bethune-Cookman for a pair of games at
