JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida men's tennis team dove into its 2008 season over the weekend in frigid Birmingham, Ala., at the Samford Winter Invitational, a flighted tournament that featured players from Samford, UAB and Jacksonville State in a three-day competition.

UNF senior Eduardo Pereira and sophomore Kurt Gattiker enjoyed a productive weekend for the Ospreys, with both players tallying 2-1 singles marks in addition to teaming to win the doubles competition in their flight.

In doubles, Gattiker and Pereira knocked off Samford's Carl Abalos and Oliver Reynolds 8-2 on Friday, UAB's Ly and Szeremata on Saturday and Jacksonville State's Eduardo Sarratt and Chris Duke on Sunday, 8-5.

Javier Ferrin was also 2-1 in singles for the Ospreys.

UNF was 5-2 in singles and 3-1 in doubles against Jacksonville State - the defending Ohio Valley Conference champion that returns five of its top six players from a year ago. The Ospreys didn't fare as well against Samford or UAB, going 2-5 in singles and 1-3 in doubles against both squads during the weekend.

The Ospreys return to action on Sunday when they open their spring dual season at Georgia Southern in Statesboro. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
